Betty White to Receive SAG Lifetime Achievement Award

Veteran actress Betty White will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild on January 23, 2010. The award will be presented to her at the Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. Betty is well known for her roles as Rose in "The Golden Girls" and Sue Ann on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", in addition to her animal rights activism. Betty continues to act at the age of 87, seemingly ageless and capable of portraying the ditzy, naive roles she is usually cast in. In real life, Betty is an intelligent woman who has the knack for those sort of roles, much the way the late Bob Denver had playing the role of Gilligan on "Gilligan's Island."

Betty White is one of a growing number of Hollywood actors who is openly critical of reality television. Unlike the occasional shows of yesteryear that were similar in context such as "Candid Camera" and "The Real World", the reality shows of today stress the negative aspects of everyday people's lives, making it near impossible to turn on network channels and expect some sort of escapism to be televised. But it is not just the stress on everyday people appearing on television, since these television shows also tend to divert potential projects and work from actors and actresses like Betty White. Even though Hollywood operates on the business principles of supply and demand, there is still a demand for quality television shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" where actors in a situation comedy are the rule and not the exception in television programming.

Much respected and liked among her peers, Betty White has widened her circle of Hollywood friends to include members of the younger set. She became close to Sandra Bullock when she worked with her in the 2009 film comedy "The Proposal." After having been nominated for eighteen Emmy awards, five of which she won, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award has long been in coming for her. Sandra will be presenting the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award to Betty on Saturday, January 23. The awards show will be televised on TNT and TBS.
