Betty's Fine Foods + Spirits in the Short North Rocks Columbus, Ohio

Robin Neorr
Betty's Fine Food + Spirits is located at 680 North High Street in Columbus Ohio is in the heart of the short north, Columbus's Arts District.

Betty's is the restaurant for the Betty in all of us. It's hot, it's spicy, and looking around at the decor it is a throwback to the sex kitten pin-ups of ages long gone. Betty's dares to ask, "Are you Betty enough?'' The walls are covered in artwork from local artists. Each artist chosen gets a long and luxurious three month stint on the walls. Artists are invited to contact Liz, Betty's Owner, to stop on in, show her your work for consideration on their walls.

They serve fine food and beverages from 11am until 2am daily. If you are hungry at noon, it';s lunch time at Betty's, are you hungry after the bars, stop on by and cap off the night with some PBR on tap.

The best way to start off a meal at Betty's is with their fried Plantains and yogurt salsa dip. The plantains have a crisp fried outer coating that crunches and a sweet and creamy plantain inside that melt in your mouth. The dressing is a saucy combination of yogurt, sour cream, and salsa. I recommend splitting the appetizer between two people. It is a little pricey at $7, but if you are going to go out you might as well get an appetizer.

One of my favorite entrees at Betty's is the famous Betty's Mac and Cheese. It is priced in at $9 which I do not think is bad for an entree. It is definitely comfort food with a twist. Betty's Mac and Cheese is made with Rotini, cheese sauce, poblano peppers, corn and red onion. You can add spicy sausage for an additional dollar, but I never do. All of Betty's pastas come with their homemade Foccacia Bread. I am personally not a fan of it because I find their Foccacia bread a little bit dry.

So you have your Plantains, and Mac and Cheese dinner, but what do you drink. The most popular beverage at Betty's is Pabst Blue Ribbon beer on tap, not a fan then why not try out the Schlitz in a can. I like to get a little crazy and drink Lindemans Framboise which is also on tap. Lindemens Framboise is a beer that tastes a lot more like a flavored fruit drink because according to the Lindemans history beers were not originally made from hops, in fact, "Long before hops were common in most beers, various fruits and vegetables were used to season beers. The acidity of Lambic beers blends perfectly with raspberries. " Yumm.

Now that you have rocked the menu at Betty's it is time for some desert. The sad news is that Betty's doesn't have a desert menu, so in cases like this I would say that it's time to order another Lindemans Framboise!
