Nadine (Poppy Montgomery), a beautiful blonde lawyer, is compelled by nightmares to search for her sister, who she hasn't seen in over four years. Still, Nadine sets out for Tijuana on a relentless journey to locate her long-lost sister, fearing she is in danger. Once south of the border, Nadine traverses her way through unfamiliar territory after the local police refuse to help her. While conducting her own investigation she suddenly becomes entangled in a strange and dreary world in which events and conversations repeat themselves, confusing her efforts and bringing questions of reality.
With such an interesting concept offering tremendous potential it was very unfortunate that Between turned out to be so terrible. The story was weak and predictable from the start. The film didn't flow well; snapping back and forth from nightmares, flashbacks, and a strange state of reality that borders an alternate universe at times. The characters lacked depth and reasonable development, which was emphasized by purely terrible dialogue and acting. Director David Ocanas and Screenwriter Robert Nelms simply fail to muster any concern or sympathy for the agitating and pushy protagonist Nadine. After all a high-strung woman on an obsessive quest for a sibling she barely knows seems to lack motivation. Even the aesthetics of the film were merely mediocre and could have been attained by any student in an advanced filmmaking course. With that in mind the Tijuana backdrop is very fitting because it, much like the film, is a bleak third-world hack trying to reap the benefits of first-world glory.
