Between September 11 and October 12

Between 9-11 and 10-12

Deonils
in the doldrums, between summer and fall
thoughts of the Fall never far away
neither are our heroes, and our fears,
still, I honor 9-11 and Columbus Day

the human spirit, the dogged determination
to go somewhere, make a path -- better
the world in some way, formed our heroes
and sheroes, past and present ... and future

Columbus Day is a month away
Nine-eleven still brings angst, pain, torments
Peace is elusive, for those who lost or won ...
History is full of scared moments

Columbus could have endured a mutiny
He was able to use his powers of suasion
Then "Land Ho!" just in time; Indian tragedy
was never his intention; the pox? Unknown companion

On nine-eleven America and the world stood together
We showed the best in our humanity
As alien and citizen pulled shoulder to shoulder
knee-deep in dust (Alas of glass, bones, debris!)

In these doldrums, saddened by another anniversary
I dwell on the best and worst in our species
As always, my hope lies beyond this universe
Our Father loved us ... always .... forgives, guides, remedies

Great job, Neil! I would have never guessed to combine Columbus Day and 9/11, but you've done just that!

Isn't it wonderful that God forgives the worst in us, while at the same time He brings out the best in human nature? Shalom Deonils!
