Beven : Fibs from an Old Man to a Grandson

Robert Lee Alford
Beven was a happy little boy who played in a garden during the day and slept on a cloud at night. All day long he would play with his friends in the garden, from sun up to sun down you could hear them play and sing happy songs. Beven also loved to sit by the sea and imagine things on the other side of the shore.

He was a boy who wanted to know what the world was about. He loved finding out new things every day even while he sang and played. All the while he daydreamed about his next adventure.

Today was a great day and Beven was happy to get up and enjoy it. As always, he brushed his teeth and made his bed but then after breakfast he was going to a special place. He had many favorite places but this day, he and his older sister Zoe, were going to his favorite place of all, the sea shore. He really couldn't wait to get there to play in the soothing waters. He just knew a great adventure awaited him.

One day while playing by the waters edge, he found something in the shallow water. It was hard on the top and looked like a hat but it had legs and was walking slowly away.

"Hello there. Are you a hat?" The little thing turned around and said "Hi there. You must be Beven. How are you?" "Oh, I am not a hat. I have legs and feet and a head, my name is Terry. I am a tortuous and I live in this shell, which is my home". "So it is a hat and a house. Wow!" said Beven. "It looks snug" "It is" said Terry the tortuous "and it keeps me safe". " From what?" "Oh let me see, things like the sun, rain and animals in the sea and on land" "Wow. Wanna sing a song?" asked Beven "Sure lets sing the fun song"

"OK" said Beven and the two laughed and sang:

Fun, fun, the greatest thing

I'm happy when I sing

With a song in your heart

No sadness life can bring

They sang for a long time and then Beven said "Well goodbye. I must go and discover something else." "So long" said Terry.

Beven walked down the shore and thought out loud to himself "I wonder what they are doing on the other side of the pond today." A voice came from the ocean "Same that you are doing I' d say." Beven turned to see something quite strange. It was a fish holding a ball on his nose and he had a hole on his head. "What kind of fish are you" asked Beven. "I'm not a fish" said the cute little animal still bouncing the ball on his nose. " Fish have gills to breath in water. I have to come up to breath." " Oh I know, you are a seal. I saw one at the zoo one day." "I'm not a seal. They don't have a hole on top of their heads to breath, but I do." "Wow. How do you keep the water out?" " It closes when I go under water ,so I don't drown".

"Wanna play ball?" "Sure" said Beven "What's your name? "Debra" the dolphin she said and she threw him the ball. The two bounced in the water for a long time and as the did, they sang the fun song and laughed.

Fun, fun, the greatest thing

I'm happy when I sing

With a song in your heart

No sadness life can bring.

They both sang until they were tired and Beven said goodbye to his new friend and he went back to sit on his blanket. Staring sleepily at the water, Bevin fell asleep and dreamed.

He dreamed that he was on a far away ship, sailing to a far away land. His sails were full and he was in search of treasure and adventure. Beven had heard that there were giant marshmallows on an island made of strawberry short cake. The beach was said to be made of candy of all kinds and everything you ate magically grew back. "I have got to find it" he thought and bring it back to family and friends. He was generous and realized it would be a waste to try and eat that much sweets, so it would make sense to eat as much as he should and bring the rest home to share.

Beven spotted the island on the horizon and sailed toward it. When they got there, he could sea that the shore was covered with ice cream and the fish sang happy songs as they scooped it up.

Look at us, look at us

We live in the sea

The sea is filled with such good things

I'm sure you will agree

Beven danced on the shore and sang with the fish and all the creatures of the sea.

I'm happy, I'm happy as can be

Your home is on the land

But mine is in the sea

They sang and laughed till Beven sat down to rest. He thought of many things and about Zoe and about what mom and dad were doing on the other shore, so he scooped up a bunch of candy and got back aboard the ship with its paper sails and started off for home. "Beven" the little fish called. "Won't you share your candy with us? We are too small to get it ourselves.

Beven loved to share, so he dropped a few pieces over board as he sailed and the fish splashed with joy and sang.

Candy is nice, candies sweat

Candies great but only as a treat.

Candies good and yummy, any flavor

The less you eat, the more that you will savor.

Beven awoke to hear the sounds of mommy making breakfast in the kitchen and got out of bed to see. When he reached the kitchen, he could see that it was pancakes today and his little plate was ready. The sweet syrup dripping over the pancakes made him remember the ice cream on the island and then he remembered the candy. "Mommy, I brought you guys some candy back from the ice cream island." "I know dear, we heard you singing with the fish last night as we placed you on your cloud to sleep". ......love you Mr. B
