Beware of Bogus Advanced Copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I Thought I was Getting a Sneak Peek

Jennifer Welch
A few days ago I thought I was the lucky recipient of an advanced copy of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As any true Potter fan would, I stayed up until the wee hours in the morning reading until I thought my eyes would literally fall out of my head. Three days and one whole box of Kleenex later I closed the lid to my laptop and rolled away from my desk completely satisfied with how it had ended.

Imagine to my surprise when, a few days later, I discovered that the pdf file I had just read through was in fact, not written by JK Rowling herself, but instead written by a fan of the Harry Potter series. I had always known there were some real hardcore Harry Potter fans out there, but ones that would actually dedicate the days albeit months that it most likely took to write 659 pages of fan fiction. I couldn't believe it. So I took to the internet and went on the hunt. Typed in Harry Potter Fan Fiction and was presented with more sites than I could possibly check out in one evening.

These sites not only encourage aspiring writers to either write alternate endings, novels, novellas, or just chapters. Some come up with completely bizarre stories just using the already established Harry Potter characters. There are message boards and forums where these fan fiction writers gather to discuss everything from the stories they had written to critiquing other authors works. I guess the old saying is true, you learn something new every day.

As for the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - I, like the rest of the world, will have to wait until its official release in July before reading it. I've also learned that the final book being leaked is next to impossible. It has been said in online circles that the final installment of the Harry Potter series is being printed in pitch black conditions. This is done to prevent leaks as to any of the stories many twist and turns. Also rumored is the workers at the German printing house have been informed that if they are caught in the act of trying to smuggle out any information concerning the final Harry Potter book they will be immediately fired. They can also lose their job if they are caught placing bets on the ending of the book.

I cant guarantee it but I'm almost positive I'll like JK Rowling's version better anyhow.

Great article. I didn't realize people went so far with their obsession with a book/movie as to do something like this. People get creeper and creeper every day.

Normally I'd write "so and so dies on page 516" here but...not here.
The net is full of weird stuff like this. Great first article! Beware of spoilers while looking for Harry Potter anything if you like it. I have never read it so laugh when I see the banter between spoilers and those who find them.

I had a friend who used to write HP fanfiction, but that person must have been pretty good to make it so believeable!!

Wow i thought that fan book was really exciting and actually i had university of cambridge international exams and i spent two days straight reading through the 659 pages of that "deathly hallows" and not studying at all... i was very excited and actually although i got the hint that it wasnt J.k's work(it was alittle adult) but i was hooked and i loved the way it all turned out and ended... i do think the author deserves some credit maybe even J.K. could have a look she'd enjoy it. i actually did only get three hours of sleep in 48 hours but it was worth it :)

If you read the whole thing and needed Kleenex, sounds like that talented fan should be writing their own book on some other subject.
BTW, congrats on the featured article.

Congratulations! Few can claim their work made the AC's "Showcase" ranking on their first published piece! Write on!

wow that is pretty amazing a fan would write that much.

wow. I've browsed around Harry Potter fan fiction and none of them have ever been that long. Also a fans style of writing would be different from Rowling's. (I've read some horrendous fan fiction, let me tell you. and some are 'just okay') Usually fans put a disclaimer stating that it's just fan fiction.

but wow whoever wrote those 659 pages. that's dedication.
