Beware of Craigslist

Debi Rideout
I used to think of Craigslist.com as a fun place to go online. I love looking at all the jobs on there, homes for sale/rent, group activities, things to buy, and the free stuff that people are giving away. Not only did I love getting things, but I also loved selling things on Craigslist. I always thought of it as a safe zone to do business on. Not anymore.

Today I read about another person being murdered by doing business on Craigslist. Heather Snively was looking for baby clothes since she was pregnant. She responded to a Craigslist ad about baby clothes. It is believed that Rob Finch killed her because they found her body in the crawl space of a home. Both Heather and her baby were dead. All because she wanted baby clothes, and she answered an ad on Craigslist.

There are other suspected killers from Craigslist.com. Two of them that come to mind are Michael John Anderson and Philip Markoff. All concerning women being murdered by being on and answering ads on Craigslist.com. One poor lady was answering a nanny job that had been posted on Craigslist.

It seems so unfair that a poor young woman is dead simply because she needed clothes for her baby, or that another woman is dead because she needed a job. Many people are being scammed, hurt, or killed by answering ads on Craigslist. Craigslist is no longer a safe zone, and it makes me sad because I have loved Craigslist so much.

There has also been news of tons of scams on Craigslist. Be careful about the personal information that you give on Craigslist. Some of the scams are people on the childcare forum. They ask you to give them your account information for some really bizarre reasons like their company they work for needs it. Do not give it to them. Another scam is on the job forum. When you apply with your resume the scam artists get all your personal information. They then use that information to do illegal acts. Always reply to a real email address, and make sure that the company is legit before responding to a job offer on Craigslist.

I believe that Craigslist can be dangerous. However, it does not mean you have to completely stop going on Craigslist.com. It just means that an individual has to be smart about it. If you are going to meet up with someone from Craigslist, always do it in a public place. Never go alone. Do not give out any personal information about yourself. Just be smart and be wary if you are on Craigslist.com.

what does she mean by "Only respond to real email addresses?" Aren't all email addresses real? Like a killer or some criminal can't open a "real" email address. It's not like you have to use your social to get one.

With Craigslist, newspaper classified, and any other situation in which you will be meeting a stranger, you must use common sense to protect yourself. Don't go alone into a situation where you will be vulnerable. Common sense will help you use these services safely.

I feel for the people who were killed after responding to Craigslist ads. No doubt, many more are victims of robberies and assaults. It's a shame that the innocent and trusting people in our society are the ones most likely to be victims. The moral is to be cautious: take someone with you or meet in a public place. Any person you meet on the Internet or through a print ad could be a predator, but predators look for easy victims. Make it hard for them to victimize you.
