Beyonce: The Best Songs Off of "B'Day"

Wes Laurie

The Beyonce album "4" came out in 2011 and I reviewed it and did not care much for it at all. However, as prolific as she is on the pop scene I figured I should go back and listen to an older album to see if my opinion of her would be altered. The album I listened to next was "B'Day" and it merely backed up the thoughts formed by listening to "4." Beyonce is meant as a download, or a video vixen, not a full record spinning diva. There were more catchy hooks here than on "4" for me, but too much junk in the trunk as well.

I did not listen to the deluxe version of "B'Day," but on the version I had the best songs are: "Irreplaceable," "Resentment," and "Check On It."

"Deja Vu": Jay Z opens with his "uh" before rapping, while Beyonce explains what musical tools are being used "hi-hat,""808," yep. Beyonce's singing runs parallel with horns, and I'm not digging it, and Jay Z's lyrics are forgettable. And when I said Beyonce's singing, I really mean yelling, I wouldn't call her singing on this track singing in most places.

"Get Me Bodied": Clap and stomp beat, has become Beyonce's bread and butter, you know it's made just so she can shake her butt in a video to sell the records. More yelling, not singing, could work well for little kids playing jump rope games.

"Suga Mama": Rolling old school funk feel to the music, but Beyonce saying "come sit on mamma lap," makes this feel more like a soundtrack novelty track. "Let me be, I wants to be, I gots to be."

"Upgrade U": More clap stomp military butt music with some thicker bass that fails to disguise the lack of deviation from the Beyonce formula.

"Ring The Alarm": Clap, stomp, and this time you get a siren. Useless without her butt shake visuals.

"Kitty Kat": Whispery into an attempt at velvety R & B, but it feels more put on for putting out instead of being realin' out. Kitty Kat snoring not purring.

"Freakum Dress": An ode to exactly what the title speaks of, supposedly ever woman has one, and you can probably figure out what that means, or not, I know, I don't speak woman either. Joking, I get it, a drum beat, beat, beat, beat, beat beat. Not interesting enough to be a repeatable anthem,

"Green Light": Give it to momma. Momma is making less and less interested, I think Beyonce should go back to doing the girl group thing.

"Irreplaceable": Beyonce is a performer and a singles artist, not an album artist - this track surrounded by skid marks, proves it to me. This single is catchy as all heck and her voice drives it perfectly. The content covers a breakup in progress and her letting the dude know she is a girl that can replace him easily.

"Resentment": Tell it to them sister, wail ballad. It could grow on you if used in moderation.

"Encore For the Fans": Beyonce talking explaining the inclusion and brief history behind the next track up "Listen," from the movie "Dreamgirls."

"Listen": Beyonce is not bad at delivering this style of music: musical, Broadway soul ballad stuff. Disney should put her in a cartoon; if they haven't.

"Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix)": More of the same is more of the same.

"Check On It": The hook is very infectious and the rest of the song does not kill that, this is a radio hit. Well, considering this album came out a long time ago I assume ti actually was and I am just now getting to it.
