Beyond Unemployment: Register for More Than Benefits on the Texas Unemployment Website
Filing for Unemployment Insurance Benefits is Only the Beginning!
Once you complete the process of applying for benefits you'll want to begin to look forward to getting a new job. The Texas Workforce Commission maintains an extensive website that can help you in your new job search. On the very same website where you apply for Texas unemployment insurance benefits, you can also start your new job search.
On the main page of the Texas Workforce Commission website, click on the area where it says "Job Seekers & Employees." This will bring up a menu where, among other things, you can search for jobs. If you click on "Search for Jobs" you will see another menu with comprehensive information about looking for jobs, places to look for work, and information on job training, among other subjects. If you want to look for work online in Texas, click on the top left menu where it says "Register Online" and it provides a link to Work In Texas. When you click that link, it will give you the opportunity to register online for jobs that go through Texas Workforce.
Under the "Looking for a Job" menu, you can register as a job seeker or you can search jobs. If you don't want to register at the moment, you can still browse the jobs but you will need to register in order to access all the functions and features. The purpose for registering is so that you can be matched with the jobs that reflect your skill level, are in your pay range, and within your geographic area. To look at job listings, though, you can enter search criteria by occupation, job title, or job description. You can also specify the specific location in Texas where you want to work.
Unfortunately, some people are under the mistaken notion that only minimum wage jobs can be found through a state workforce commission but this simply isn't true. Try it yourself and you will see that there are a wide variety of jobs available in Texas. I simply typed in a zip code in the Lubbock area and the results included jobs for physicians, teachers, nurses, truck drivers, and a wide variety of occupations. While it is interesting to see the vast number of occupations represented, it is also nice to be able to narrow your search by a specific occupation if you are searching for a job in a particular field.
There are still many different things you can do on the Texas Unemployment Website besides file for unemployment benefits and look for jobs. You can also look for child care resources and resources for education and training so that you can get back out into the work force. Spend some time on the Texas site for unemployment benefits even after you have filed your claim. You may find something that can change your life for the better and help you as you prepare to go back into the workforce.
