With every message that I prepare, I intend for prayer to be the starting point. The Bible is a spiritual message, and therefore, must be spiritually discerned. Prayer reaches out for God's help, and the Holy Spirit has promised us that He would lead us into all truth. So, as we pray the Holy Spirit becomes our guide, and we come to an understanding of the Word of God that we cannot get in any other way. We must never forget that the Bible is God's Word.
(b) Meditation and Memory:
Following prayer and simple reasoning, I plan to meditate on the passage or verse at hand; to mull it over, like a cow who chews its cud. The goal is to receive certain aspects, visions, and understandings that can't be drawn from reason alone. Also, through meditation, Scripture will be remembered more so than if I didn't meditate on the Scripture. My memory of the Scriptures will help my preparation time and especially my daily walk with the King. It must be noted here also that this isn't a "mystical" endeavor. It's not about "feelings", but continually thinking on what the text means as written, and how many ways this truth can be applied throughout various situations in the lives of believers.
(c) Application and Obedience:
In application, my goal is to show the audience how God's Word is relevant for them today. It's relevant because it's God's Word no doubt, but it's more than just a history lesson. God's Word is a timeless message; however, the application is often determined by the age, gender, situation, as well as the culture of the audience. Before this application is given to the audience, it must be present and active in my life. Obedience often qualifies the message that I preach to the hearers. Not only this, but it also helps me to be more personal and detailed in my application, thus better equipping the hearers to apply God's Word to their lives.
