Being a Muslim American, I know if Ellison did choose to place his hand on the Holy Bible it would not have any significance for him, nor any other Muslim. The reason being is because the Holy Bible has been changed so many times throughout history that the number of translations and interpretations can not be counted. There is proof that part of the Bible was burned and other parts added to it. So by the Islamic faith, Muslims believe that part of the Bible was written by the One True God, Allah, (the Torah (first five books) and the Injeel.) Muslims have to believe in all of God's holy books, including the Bible as part of the Islamic faith. However, since man changed it, it holds no real divine religious significance anymore. You can visit web article "Has the Bible Been Changed."
Muslims also believe that since the Bible was changed, God sent down the Holy Qu'ran to clarify what was misplaced in the Bible. Muslims also believe that God promised to protect the Qu'ran by not letting a single word be changed from the book until it is taken off of the earth. This belief has proved true, since the Qu'ran has not been changed at all from it's original Arabic text for over 1400 years during the time it was revealed to God's last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
I actually had a chance to speak with Dennis Prager last week (the last week of November 2006), because I felt the need to call his show after hearing him blast Ellison about being sworn in and other Muslims for jihad and other related topics. Prager asked me how I felt about the killing of the Infidels and the non-Muslims. I simply told him that all humans the right to live and that Islam does not teach the killing and massacring of non-Muslims for no reason. I also stated that if Muslims killed all non-Muslims, there could not be any more converts into the religion. I too am a convert to the Islamic faith from Christianity and I know even before I was Muslim, I was treated fairly and lovingly by those who were.
I was a little upset because Prager did not give me an opportunity to answer the question as to why Ellison should be allowed to be sworn in on the Holy Qu'ran. So now I wanted to make my point clear for others to understand. For Ellison to be sworn in on the Bible would be like him being sworn in on a copy of Moby Dick, it no longer holds any true divinity to the Muslims, because man has changed it. For Ellison to be sworn in on the Qu'ran means more and his oath will be solid if he truly believes in the words of God.
Prager's blasted comments have not only caused controversy but has sparked over 800 comments on the columnist's page. Ellison's office has received several racists e-mails and threats and has started up an entire campaign against the elected official. People have gone as far to say that the Democrat should resign if he is not willing to be sworn in on the Bible. This to me is a form of terrorism on Prager's part. He is acting like the bully on the playground who doesn't like the kid with glasses so he turns everyone against him. He is literally trying to start a verbal war against or to manipulate any peace between Muslims and non-Muslims.
Americans have freedom of religion whether Prager likes it or not. It is not fair to criticize someone because they do not hold the same beliefs as you or they are doing things differently than you would like them too. Prager is a bigot, whether he wants to admit it or not. I just feel as if the media is doing a great job pulling people into their web of lies. They feed the American public with words like "Islamic Jihadists" "Islamic Terrorists" and people start to believe them. I am positive that every person that is agreeing with Prager has never once picked up a Qu'ran and read it. I am so tired of people not thinking for themselves and going by what the masses say. So to all of those people that do agree with this bigot I challenge you to read the Qu'ran or maybe a few versus from the holy book, you may even want to check out the web address stated in this article. Then you can make your own decisions about the matter.

Post a CommentAnd the answer is....neither. Members of Congress are not sworn in on any religious text. The swearing-in is done en masse, right hand raised. There is no "so help me God", either. Members being sworn in may hold a religious text in their left hands if they so choose. The pictures you and everyone else see are the photo ops that take place after the official swearing-in--there is absolutely nothing official about that, it is entirely ceremonial.
Controversy over.
That this is even a concern with so many shows just how far we still have to go on some fronts...we have to understand that ALL religions should be tolerated, and ALL fundamentalism should be marginalized. And as "Mystic Raven" pointed out in her comment, the Constitution would be a great choice for swearings in. I'm sure Bush would have a problem with that one-he is definitely holding true to his fundamentalist base, while having no problem dismissing the Constitution as something he needs to work around. More of an obastacle than a precious freedom document.
YES!!! Ellison was sworn in on the Qu'ran!!! Too bad so sad Prager, you lost!!!
I find it ironic that Prager says "it [swearing in on the Qu'ran] undermines American culture". Last time I checked America was formed on religous tolerance? The more people try to force one religion on to Americans, the more we forget the entire reason America was founded.
I agree that he should be sworn in on his own holy book. Otherwise, the bible wouldn't mean anything to him and it defeats the purpose of being sworn in. I have to wonder, what would an atheist be sworn in on? It's ridiculous how many people think this is a Christian country. It's not. We are supposed to accept all religions.
I thought that the significance of "swearing" on something (one's mother's life, the bible, etc.)was supposed to illustrate one's level of seriousness about the oath they were taking. For a muslim to swear on something not included in his/her beliefs would be meaningless as being sworn in on a Sears catalogue.
The great thing about the USA is that someone name Childs or Ellison can be Muslim, while a guy named Barack Obama is Christian. In the end, my we're just arguing over who has the coolest imaginary friend.
I can understand why Ellison would want to put his right hand on something that he believes in but if your going to take an othe to defend the constitution then people should be sworn in with a copy of the constitution.
A copy of the constitution would be the most appropriate document to swear on.
It seems to me that the people who are opposed to Mr. Ellison using the Qu'ran are no different than the Muslim extremists we are fighting against, they too would like to force their beliefs and way of life on others. They also think that their religion is the supreme religion. The American people should get a grip and learn that Christians are not the only people on this planet!
