Bible Scripture for Encouragement

Betsy Wise
God is a best selling author of the Bible and His book continues to sell copies. Bible scripture provides encouragement to bring continued direction for people's lives through His Holy Word, the Bible. These 5 Bible scripture accounts focus on people needing encouragement. In 2008 and beyond we can glean from these words of encouragement from Bible scripture.

Elijah Thinks He Is Alone

"I have worked very hard for the Lord God of the heavens; but the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you and torn down your altars and killed your prophets, and only I am left and they are trying to kill me too" (I Kings 20:10). This Bible scripture reveals Elijah's hopelessness after a victory over the false prophets of Baal. In the Bible scripture, God was able to bring encouragement to Elijah by revealing there were 7,000 people still standing with God (verse 18). Elijah needed this encouragement when he felt alone.

Moses Brings Encouragement to Joshua

"But Joshua the son of Nun, stands before thee, he shall go in; encourage him for he shall cause Israel to inherit it (the land)" (Deuteronomy 1:38). Even before the journey to Israel starts, this Bible scripture shows God instructing Moses to bring encouragement to Joshua for the upcoming trip.

David Brings Encouragement to Joab

"Well, tell Joab not to be discouraged, David said. The sword kills one as well as another. Fight harder next time, and conquer the city; tell him he is doing well" (II Samuel 12:25). Unfortunately this encouragement to Joab comes at one of David's lowest moments as presented by Bible scripture. David commands Joab to have Uriah killed to gain his wife, Bathsheba.

Hannah Encourages Herself

"How I rejoice in the Lord! How he has blessed me!" (I Samuel 2:1). Hannah turns over her son to the priest Eli because she promises God that if He gives her a son, she will give him back to God. In this Bible scripture Hannah speaks these words of encouragement to herself as she follows through on her promise to God.

Jesus Welcomes Peter To Dinner

"Jesus said unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples dare ask him, Who are you? Knowing that it was the Lord" (John 21:12). Peter is heartsick that he denied even knowing Jesus before His crucifixion. This Bible scripture reveals that Jesus forgives Peter and this invitation to dinner brings encouragement to him. Plus Jesus is now alive and Peter enjoys further encouragement and relief that Jesus, His friend and Lord, is safe.

Bible scripture reveals many stories of people receiving and giving encouragement which continues to be important to those today trying to move forward after hardship.
