"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown." Genesis 6:1-4
Genesis 6 has become a topic of much controversy these days, mostly over the terms "sons of God" the "daughters of men" and "the Nephilim." The King James translates "Nephilim" as "giants" when "tyrant" was the original interpretation. The Nephilim were indeed a race of giants but they were also mercilessly vicious and they taught humans about things not yet known to man.
The early Christians interpreted these passages to mean that angels cohabited with human women and produced a race of hybrids which was why God destroyed them in the flood.
The traditional view (taught in most seminaries today) is commonly referred to as the line of Seth. The "sons of God" are interpreted "sons of Seth" and the "daughters of men" as the "daughters of Cain" which is not true to the text.
How could a union between good men and bad women create a race of giants? And why would God destroy Earth's entire population because of mixed marriages? The Israelites intermarried with pagan women and God didn't destroy the population. Good men married bad women throughout the Bible including many priests and at least one of the prophets.
The term "sons of God" always refers to angels in the Old Testament and never to humans. Adam was called a son of God because he was a direct creation of God as were the angels. We are not a direct creation of God. We are the descendants of Adam. Adam "begat a son in his own likeness, after his image" Genesis 5:3
People who believe that we are all the children of God are seriously mistaken. Mere flesh and blood humans are not the children of God. The religious leaders of Jesus' day believed they were the children of God but Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire." John 8:42-44
In the New Testament, only born again believers are called sons of God. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God."
The "sons of God" in Genesis 6 refers to angels who left their natural state and went after strange flesh. According to Jude, the Lord's brother, they are now in chains awaiting final judgment but the offspring they created apparently corrupted every human on Earth except Noah and his family.
"Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations..." This type of perfection is the same as commanded of a sacrificial animal- perfect and without blemish.
Nevertheless, these hybrids were still on the Earth after the flood. "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward..." According to Isaiah, they will not be resurrected. "They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise." Isaiah 26:14
The land of Canaan was overrun with them. Goliath is perhaps the most well-known but there were different races or tribes of giants. When the spies were sent into Canaan they came back to the camp saying, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." Numbers 13:33
The reason for the controversy over this today is the rise in occult activity and the UFO phenomena. Many scientists believe that so-called UFOs are manifestations of multidimensional beings or demons (their term).
If this is true it means that Satan is at it again. He tried to corrupt the blood line in Genesis 6 trying to prevent the birth of the woman's seed and now that the Lord's return is near he seems to be up to something just as bad or perhaps even worse.
Nebuchadnezzar's statue in Daniel sheds a lot of light on this as well. "And in that you saw the iron mixed with common clay, they will combine with one another in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine with pottery." Daniel 2:43
If "they" won't combine with the seed of men then "they" must be something other than the seed of man.
In conclusion, we are quickly approaching a time that the New testament speaks more about than anything else- the second coming of Jesus Christ and the consummation of the ages. Daniel said that in the last days knowledge will be increased and with the help of the Internet we have a plethora of information right at our fingertips.
The truth of the Bible is not being taught in many churches today. We need to study the Bible and pray for the Holy Spirit to guide our hearts and minds into all truth. There will be a great deception in the end times and it will be so convincing that even the elect could be deceived if possible.
