Bible Study from Matthew 9:36-38

Jesus Feels Compassion for Those Without a Shepherd

This Bible Study comes from Matthew 9:36-38. It says that Jesus looked around Him at the people. He was moved with pity for them because they were harassed and helpless. He saw so many needs. People were hurting. They were hurting physically, spiritually, and emotionally. The government was giving many problems. They were heavily taxed by the government. They were helpless to the taxes too. This made them poor and destitute. They had become discouraged and they wanted a leader that would rescue them from the power of their government.

God hurts when we hurt. He takes pity on us. We have to realize that we are helpless without God. Satan loves to harass us and cause problems in our lives. Our only help is God. The people felt abandoned and that their shepherd had left them. We are lost like sheep just like these people were. If we do not follow Jesus, we have no shepherd just like these people didn't. When sheep have no shepherd they get into every form of trouble that there is because they are dumb. They need a leader. It is the same with us. Unless we let the Lord lead us we are going to end up into all kinds of trouble. We need to be careful because Satan is the big bad wolf and he will eat us up.

At this next point Jesus turns to His disciples and tells them that there are not enough workers to help these people. There are so many needs and not enough people. This is still the case today. God is calling us to be a worker. We need to go out and find those that are lost. We need to bring them to our shepherd so that they can be safe and well. Are we following this call from Jesus? Jesus tells His disciples that it is their responsibility to pray to the Father and ask Him for more workers. God wants us in prayer about this situation too. We need to be praying that God changes our hearts and the hearts of our fellow brothers and sisters. We need to be following the example of the Lord and go out to reach others.

One last thing that I want you to notice is that when Jesus tells the disciples to pray to the Father for more workers is that God is the one in control. He is the one that will bring the workers. If the workers are not sent by God, then they are not of God. This is were a lot of false teachings and spreading of the wrong "good news" comes from. Satan loves to sow bad seed as well. He will take something good that the Lord wants to do and turn it for his glory instead. May our God get the glory instead.
