Bible Verses for Foodies

"And Bring Hither the Fatted Calf, and Kill It; And Let Us Eat, and Be Merry"

Cindy Lynn
In these days of ultra-skinny models, such as Gisele Bundchen, and even thinner movie stars, those of us who are foodies are often made to feel like piglets wallowing in the mud. But, have no fear ... the Bible is here! Yes, there are numerous Bible verses that talk about food, about its value to us, and even tell in detail what foods we should eat.

Bible Verses that Speak of Fruits, Vegetables, and Meat

Genesis 1:29
"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."

Leviticus 11:9
"These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat."

Malachi 3:10-11
"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. "

Bible Verses that Speak of Bread

Exodus 16:15
"And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat."

John 6:12-14
"When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world."

Luke 14:15
"And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God."

If those verses from the King James version of the Bible aren't convincing enough, then the one that will definitely do the trick is found in Luke 15:22-23. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, the father rejoiced at the return of his son, whom he had previously considered lost. "But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry ...."
