Biblical Baby Names Beginning with the Letter Z

Biblical Names Beginning with 'Z' and Their Meanings

Kristen Wilkerson
In modern times, new parents love using a unique name for naming their baby. In addition, many of these same parents enjoy choosing names from the Bible. Some names are more common than others, but people world-wide need names for their new babies and what is common to you or me could sound foreign in other parts of the world. As such, I have compiled a list of elegantly beautiful names to choose from. I have included their biblical meaning, location in the Bible, a bit about the real person, and some of my own commentary.

This list contains only "Z" names because no "W, X, or Y" names could be found in the Bible. Other lists explore more letters of the alphabet (see the chart at the bottom of this article for other letters.)

Zabad means "He has given" or "gift." 1 Chron. 2:36-37. Zabad was a member of the tribe of Judah. Another Zabad was one of three men ordered to divorce their foreign-born wives.

Zacchaeus or Zaccheus means "innocent." Luke 19:2-9. Ironically, Zaccheus was anything but innocent when he took money illegally in his role as a tax collector. After climbing a tree to watch Jesus and converting, however, Zaccheus returned the money he had taken with interest.

Zaham means "fatness" or "loathing." 2 Chron. 11:18-19. Zaham was the son of King Rehoboam by Abihail.

Zalmunna means "protection is withdrawn." Judges 8:1-21. Zalmunna was the king of Midian who Gideon captured and killed.

Zebedee means "gift." Mark 1:19-20 and Luke 5:10. Zebedee was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. He knew many of Jesus' disciples because his sons were James and John. Also, he had several hired servants, including Simon Peter and Andrew.

Zechariah means "Yah remembered." 2 Kings 15:8-12. At least 35 Zechariahs are mentioned in the Bible. One Zechariah urged the people of Judah to rebuild the temple.

Zelek means "cleft" or "fissure." 2 Sam. 23:37. Zelek was one of David's 30 elite warriors.

Zerah means "sunrise." Gen. 46:12. Zerah was a twin born to Tamar and her father-in-law, Judah.

Zeruah means "stricken" or "leprous." 1 Kings 11:26. Zeruah was the mother of King Jeroboam. Although its meaning is not pleasant, Zeruah is one of the few female biblical "Z" names.

Zipporah means "small bird" or "sparrow." Exod. 2:21-22; 18:2-6. Zipporah was Moses' first wife who saved Moses' life and mothered his children named Gershom and Eliezer. She stayed with her father until Moses led the people out of Egypt. Zipporah is another female biblical "Z" name.

Many other biblical "Z" names exist, including Zaavan, Zabdiel, Zabud, Zebina, Zebul, Zenas, Zephaniah, Ziba, Zibiah, Zichri, Zobebah, Zohar, Zphai, Zuar, Zuph, Zur, and Zuriel.

Do any of these names strike your fancy? In other words, which is your favorite from this list and why? Or do you know of a different biblical "Z" name you would add? Please leave your comments below, and "Share This" with others!

Good article, and I did not realize there were so many Z names in the Bible. I, too, like Zoey.

I love Zaccheus above the othes...but I had no clue that there were so many Z-named people. I love the name Zoey too, but I know its not biblical. Great article and good research here Kristen. :-)

Hey Kristen, this was a great list. There is one "Y" name in the bible though. It is Yahweh, the name of God in the Hebrew Bible. Cheers :)
