BICYCLE SAFETY: Some things to know.

Avoiding injuries is important in order for you to have a fun time biking. Now that the weather is getting warmer, it is time to get outside and ride.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND...

Avoid wearing loose clothing, or coats. These can get caught in the bicycles chains or wheels. If you wear something that dangles down near the area of your feet, you should tape the clothing around your ankles, or secure them with rubber bands, or straps.

When riding at nighttime, make sure that you are wearing reflective clothes or armbands, leg bands, or a vest. Make sure to wear them where they will be seen, especially when riding alone.

Always obey the street signs and road rules.

Remember to wear appropriate sized helmet. They must be according to the law.

Use proper hand signals. If you do not know them, then you should get a book or something and become familiar enough to use them.

Stay on the right side of traffic. This should be going the way the traffic goes.

Stay a safe distance away from other vehicles.

Stay alert at all times.

Make sure all equipment is working properly before you get on your bicycle. Checking the brakes, gears, wheels, spikes, and chains is a good idea.

Do not let someone ride on the handlebars or the back of the bicycle.
Watch out for parked cars that might be backing out.

Equipment should fit the person correctly. You should make an effort to be totally protected.

-Eye protection is important because it keeps debris out of the eyes while biking.

-Using a backpack to carry your things in is perfect.

-Make sure you have reflectors on your bicycle, and make sure they are red.

-Maybe, if you ride at nighttime, you should get a front headlight. Make sure it is white.

-Brakes and tires should be checked.

-Carry a water bottle. You will need something if you get thirsty.

If you keep certain road rules in your head, and keep your surroundings in mind, you will be safe and happier. Get out there and enjoy the outdoors.
