Bicycling: Healthy, Cheap and Great for Family Time

Jerry
Bicycling is probably the cheapest way to get around in a fast manner, and it provides us with many other benefits as well. Many Americans have become so used to having a car and working around the clock, they very seldom consider that there are other options for travel. Bicylcing is not only a great way to get around, but an efficient way to get in some healthy exercise on a daily basis.

Exercise

Many Americans do not get exercise on a regular basis, and those that choose to ride bikes to and from work, to friends, etc. tend to be in much better shape. Bicycling is a great form of exercise, and is much better on the joints than running and jogging, as well as is much more entertaining than running to most people. You can actually get somewhere relatively quickly with a bicycle, nearly as fast as with a car in many situations.

Family Activity

Many families need new ways to spend time together, and bicycling is by no means an exception. Not only is riding bikes a healthy family activity for physical purposes, but it gives the family a great time to get out without being cramped into the car and going directly to a diner or a bowling alley. Riding bikes gives the family some time to actually communicate, as well as get some fresh air, which will make the experience an all around more enjoyable time.

Efficiency

The price of upkeeping a bike is next to nothing, and one can get a bike extremely cheap in several locations. Often times, people decide that they don't use their bike as often as they wished they would, and nearly new bicycles end up in garage sales for quite cheap prices. Garage and yard sales are a great way to get a good deal on a more expensive bike. Also, many retail stores offer sales on bikes at many times during the year, sometimes even during the times of the year where bicycles are wanted the most. Even brand-name bicycles can often be purchased for under 100$ and these bikes, when proper care is taken, will last the rider many cycling seasons. You won't have to pay for gas, repairs, etc. The only upkeep for a bike is really keeping the chain clean, and the tires full of air!

Portability

You can really take a bike in many places that you could never go if you were in a car. You can go through the woods on trips, ride on sidewalks, and go just about anywhere you please. Get a mountain bike, and you can go anywhere you want to with great ease. Bikes are also great for getting around while on camping trips, and can really add to the camping experience.
