Ivory, a friend of years back, got called into the bosses' office, "what was the deal man?" It wasn't any of my business but Ivory and I had become partners, we were getting tight, and I was feelin' nosey. "He jumped up and down, whooped and hollered about some calls I made, man; it was no big deal." Yeah right, I knew otherwise, "Ivory one of these days man..." He jumped back in, "yeah right, I know, one of these days, he's gonna lose it and do us both a favor...ya know what really got him hot?" I could probably guess but shook my head no, "I told him to go ahead and take a big bite." I couldn't help myself; the laugh just shook out..."a big bite?" I thought I got it but it was just so funny had to see if I was right. "Yeah man, I told him since he was so busy bittin' me in the a__ __, why mess around wit' it, shucks go on and get a big bite! Get really satisfied, that's all he like to eat anyhow." I was rollin' - as I said something about that being a lie...but we both knew...it wasn't.
Some people who get power shouldn't, it's just that simple; they can't handle it, and they shouldn't have it. Sometimes it goes to their head, as if they are special, they used to work in the mail room, but now they have moved up into supervising the distribution center- so suddenly, even though you used to go to lunch together, you suck. They shouldn't get power, it goes right to their head, which means it bypasses their heart on the way to their ...other parts- where they will show that other part in exercisin' what they think should be done. Some people shouldn't have power, it isn't good for them, they can't handle it, and they make a mess out of their own hides and everyone else's too.
Some people should have power, they know precisely what it is for, and they use it to make everyone, and everything around them, better. Nothing about power goes to their head, because their head is already filled with too much content that is meaningful. They share what they can to help others grow, and they are generally humble, easy to get along with, and well liked. If their peers and subordinates could vote, they'd vote to give them "way more power," than they have simply out of respect. Good luck finding these people, but they are out there, and when you touch life with them, savor it.
What makes some good with power and others not good? Some people would say its genes, but that's a cop out almost every time it's used. Some people would say its upbringing, but once again, that turns into why parents are at fault, and past a certain point, they aren't, and we all know it. What is likely the reason has to do with what Bob Proctor, author and speaker calls, "keeping the main thing, the main thing?" Some people seem to be able to do this, and others seem incapable of getting it together. What about you, where do you stand? Are you a person who handles power well, or are you honest enough to admit it gets away from you? If you had been Ivory's boss when he told you to take a big bite, what would you have done? Check out our blog and leave your comment, we'd love to hear it and share it, meanwhile...don't get bit...

Post a CommentAmen! People with power can be real j-e-r-k-s. I highly respect people with power who use it fairly and responsibilty. The rest are just trouble.
