Big Brother 9: "Excuse Me, Diary Room, Can Someone Please Place a Call for a Make Over?"

Now don't get me wrong, it isn't that I have no sense of style, that I'm not up to speed on what's "cool" or that I have an allergy to all things neon. It's like this. Despite my upbringing in a somewhat olive and rust colored home, I do have a sense of style that bristles when it sees more than one color not found in nature in the same room, passing as décor. Its true, I like Big Brother and dream all things James, but let's be honest here, if the flower power table wasn't enough to make the most colorblind of the bunch blanch, add to it hot chili dishes with colors that reek of the southwest and you have a nightmare episode of The Brady Bunch goes to the southwest gone bad.

And while we're discussing Big Brother and the clashes therein. If they knew James was a man who loved color in his life, then couldn't they have coordinated his hair with the décor? As it is, his Mohawk was blinding enough without it clashing with the décor. Of course maybe his hair was his lucky charm, he did avoid being evicted three times by winning back to back to back POV competitions. Perhaps if he had matched a bit more, he'd still be in the game instead of in the sequester house planning his round the world biking trip.

And can someone tell me who had the bright idea to frame the houseguest's pictures as they did? To this eye untrained in all things "cool in design" it appears as if someone went outside after the last storm hit, grabbed some downed tree limbs and decided to "go green" with the frames. Not bad if you see one or two fashioned such, but seeing a whole wall of them is a bit much. Of course, after the show, they can be recycled for BB10's backyard fire pit when you think about it. Now, I suspect they were going for the rustic look but enough is enough. There is a time when you have to say "STOP" before Smokey the Bear gets ticked about you destroying all his trees. All this I also suspect has its roots in entertainment/eye candy value and stirring up "chatter". Both which have happened in spades.

But honestly when it comes to adding attraction to the show, Big Brother should have let the houseguests be in charge of the sparkle. From Ryan's glittering earrings to the natural beauty (none enhanced I'm sure) of the houseguests, (especially Sheila who actually looks pretty darn good for a 46 year old mother) Big brother really could have saved some of the decorating budget and let the houseguests go it on their own.

And when it came to promoting entertainment, there were always late night gab fests in the hot tub ala "woman talk", ER visits such as the slop reactions Amanda and Alison experienced or even the unofficial "nude day" James celebrated, viewers never had to worry about entertainment with this bunch. Even Adam got into the act with a little bit of controversy, when he insulted an Autism society he supposedly worked for, a job he held for only three months some time ago, not the "up to date" position he led houseguests to believe he had prior to entering the house. Or for those who like a little mystery with their Big brother, there was always the exiting of Neil due to an "urgent personal matter", which, by the way, has still to be explained fully.

All in all, Big Brother 9, though with only about two weeks to go, has been an entertaining season and though it isn't "24" by any great shakes, it has proven to hold the attention of and keep interested, audiences which have brought it up to the top trio most watched shows of the season. Not bad for a show that basically consists of backbiting, snarling, plotting and slop. And if you thought this season was good, wait until summer. CBS has recently announced that it will unveil Big Brother 10 later this summer. Big brother 10 will have to be pretty darn special to top this season but if you ask me, they'll do it hands down.
