Big East Championship Game 2010 Another West Virginia Nail Biter

Robert Dougherty
The Big East championship game 2010 was a fitting end to the week. In the Big East championship game 2010, Georgetown and West Virginia went right down to the wire. At least half of the games this week ended the same way, with the Mountaineers becoming experts at it. In all three games they've played, the Mountaineers have had to win at the last second, while barely managing over 50 points. But in all three cases, West Virginia ultimately got through, and they did the same at this year's Big East championship game, thanks to a familiar hero.

The Mountaineers run got started with a Da'Sean Butler buzzer-beater against the Bearcats on Thursday. Last night, Butler left a little more time on the clock, but it made little difference. His awkward layup with 4.2 seconds left was the deciding blow in a 60-58 win over the Hoyas, for West Virginia's first conference crown.

The Big East championship game 2010 pitted a West Virginia team that lived on the edge, against a Georgetown team that had dominated the competition. But the match played to the Mountaineers' pace, as it was low scoring and often brutal in the second half. However, the Hoyas were up to the challenge, as they rallied from two nine point deficits.

It ultimately came down to the final minute, even though West Virginia didn't get a field goal for seven minutes at the end. Free throws were keeping the Mountaineers alive, as the Hoyas looked set for overtime. Yet Da'Sean Butler ended the West Virginia drought with his shot, and Georgetown's subsequent drive down the court fell just short.

At last, the Big East championship game 2010 left the only surviving favorite as the champion. The Mountaineers were the only 'double bye' team to make it past the quarterfinals, and even that took some luck. Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Georgetown all could have knocked them off, but West Virginia avoided falling off the tight rope, thanks to MVP Butler.

With this first conference title, the Mountaineers will likely be a two seed on Selection Sunday, despite still hoping for a one. As for the Hoyas, the Big East championship game solidified their improbable run, and they could reap the benefits on the brackets.

Before this week, Georgetown would have been a low seed, but now they're expected to be a three or even a two. If the eighth seed in the Big East tournament could be a three in the NCAAs, that speaks to the conference's power.

The Mountaineers and Hoyas now get some needed rest and will wait for their seeding assignments tonight.
