In one of Paine's seminal works, Common Sense, he states, "Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one . . ."
The necessary evil of government is accepted and mostly ignored by the citizens of the United States. What is not acceptable to those who are thinking participants of the citizenry is the unbridled growth of government to the extent that it intrudes into all intimate areas of a citizen's life.
While the Constitution of the United States says nothing about a two party system, the Democrats and the Republicans have harnessed the political process mainly to satisfy their own perpetuation and agendas and not necessarily the needs and desires of "We the People."
The political process has been distilled to the extent that classifications are minimized to left or right and distinctions within that contrived parameter. The evidence for the aforementioned assertion is easily garnered by a review of the Congressional voting records of members of both parties. The two party differences vanish when one reviews legislation that has passed that both increases the size of government and its costs.
The wisdom of Adams and Paine is as applicable in 2009 as it was during the formation of this country. Yet, those in Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, are on the verge of burdening the citizenry with a yoke that both forces government dependence on the population and extracts resources from the middle class, what's left of it, for use by the government. Those resources, which could be used for growth in the private sector, will be wasted in the halls of bureaucracy in Washington, D.C.
The specific issue that is the bondage implied by the yoke is known as OBAMACARE.
While on the surface the politicians, most loudly the Democrats, are claiming this is a revolutionary and benevolent act that will bring entitlements to the less fortunate, OBAMACARE is an attack on the individual liberty of every citizen and an attempt by the Democrats to further their objectives to redistribute the wealth of this nation.
"We the people" have said and say, "Leave us Alone."
