You know 470 Vanderbilt, the huge building that's been mostly vacant and a little spooky for years.

Back in 2008, Brownstoner reported "Big Plans for 470 Vanderbilt." Then, there was talk of market-rate and affordable housing, a large grocery store, bookstore or cafe, and maybe even a bowling alley at the $50 million hulking property.

Today, The Local reports a change in the big plans. A welfare center may open at 470 Vanderbilt. Community Board 2 has approved a plan for the Human Resources Administration (HRA). It would lease two floors of the building. They would be used for "a food stamp center, domestic violence offices, and job training programs." This deal involves 1,800 workers and 1,500 clients, which would bring a lot of business into the neighborhood. It also involves a 20-year lease that the city must still approve.

Back in June, the Community Board voted the plan down, unanimously, due to concerns about clients in the neighborhood and parking. It has since had a change of heart with all but one member voting for the project.

Now, on Sept. 27, it will be up to the City Planning Commission at a Review Committee meeting.

What say you, Clinton Hill? Is there any viable risk to having the welfare center at 470 Vanderbilt? If you feel there is a risk, is it worth taking to get green flowing into the 'hood or not? What's best for the community?

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile
