China, in its ongoing attempts to become the world's next superpower, has been developing ground-based lasers to disrupt U.S. satellites for some time now. This act has finally come to light after being reported it fired the beam to jam our hardware in space. The details have not been reported by the Pentagon or White House in order to keep our attention focused on the China that is supposedly on our side with the crisis in North Korea but this small unnoticed act is only one that should start causing alarms in the heads of Americans.
Just a day later it was reported that Chinese hackers have been stepping up their computer hacking attacks against the U.S. Commerce Department. Many experts and lawmakers agree that Beijing has a role in these on going cyber attacks but the public knows little about the situation or the severity. Apparently the government thinks it is pretty bad; the Commerce Department Bureau and Industry and Security (BIS) recently had to replace all of their computers and install a new computer system and the government had to stop a plan to install 16,000 new computers manufactured by a Chinese company.
In the 21st century high-tech world where America's military and government depend on accurate computers and space satellites these small, disruptive attacks can not afford to go unnoticed. There is no question China is eager to become a world superpower and dealing with America is only in their short term interests until the Communist government feels it is capable to defeat us. Over the past decade we know they have stolen our nuclear and defense secrets under Bill Clinton, manipulated their currency against the US dollar to bolster their economy, lied about the actual spending of their defense budget and more recently have taken down an American spy plane and consistently side with maniac dictators in Iran, Venezuela and North Korea.
As we ignorantly stand by we are watching a new major player enter the world with a bang. The Chinese economy is growing by leaps and bounds while freedom of speech and human rights are thrown down the tube but since we are getting cheap products not many elected officials come out against these abuses. In affect we are actually funding the military machine they are building in the Far East.
In Jed Babbin and Edward Timperlake's book "Showdown: Why China Wants War With the United States", the two authors go more into the aggressive military buildup that China is engaging in (actually more rapid than Nazi Germany) and what the Chinese hope to accomplish in the near future. They also highlight many possible scenarios the Chinese government may take to start war with the United States citing military commanders from the US and take you inside the Politburo of China. It just so happens that some of the attacks recently reported about China have been written in "Showdown" and the aftermath is very frightening.
The question is after we are made to think what kind of actions we are going to take in order to stop China from provoking an all out World War where there will be no winners or losers.

Post a CommentGreat article, Bill. I used to live there (written a few things about China in AC) and I saw that they have a lot to be proud of. They've come a long way. Innovative or not, if they get a hold on a technology that can be used to their advantage, they'll reverse engineer it and make it 10 times better - and fast, too. That's something the military watchdogs will be worried about. All agendas aside, the only thing that will work is for all of us to drop the "us vs them" idea and recognize that we're in it together. Perhaps the world environmental problems will be a blessing in disguise to unify us...
Good article; you've brought to light a lot of interesting information I had never heard before. However, I think your claim that this will inevitably lead to war is a little hasty. I've published a response piece if you're interested:

Name one technological INNOVATION that has come out of China since 1949. They will have to loosen the political grip before the truly innovative, creative vanguard of the business and intellectual community want to stay in China to pursue their dreams and ideas. For all its faults this country is still the best at fostering true innovation both econimically and intellectually. That being said... stay on your toes.
Great story! Glad to see we are still in the loop.
Nice work, Ive been worried about China for some time.
