A Look at Day Two of the Big Ten Tournament

The second day of the Big Ten tournament provided all the upsets and thrills you could want. For a more in depth look at the Big Ten tournament, check out my Big Ten tournament preview here.

Here's a game by game look at the second day of the Big Ten tournament:

Wisconsin defeats Michigan 51-34

This was an ugly game from the get go. Michigan made only 10 of 50 shots, and managed a total of only 34 points. Wisconsin didn't fare much better from the floor, sinking only 34% of its attempts. Anthony Wright led the impotent Wolverine offense with 11 points, going 4-10 from the field and 3-9 from behind the arc. The Badgers were led by Joe Krabbenhoft who hit all six of his free throw attempts. Number one seed Wisconsin looked downright awful in their first game of the Big Ten tournament, but they were lucky to be playing against a Michigan team that looked like they had never played the game. Wisconsin will face off against Michigan State in the semifinals.

Michigan State defeats Ohio State 67-60

Each of these teams were playing their first game of the Big Ten tournament, getting lucky with the first round by that the 4 and 5 seeds receive, but getting a tough break having to face one of the better teams of the tourney in their first game. This game was a flashback to just five days ago, when Ohio State knocked off Michigan State by nine in their regular season finale. That win put the Buckeyes on the bubble, and they needed a repeat of that performance to feel good about their chances to make the NCAA tournament. Michigan State, led by Drew Neitzel's 28 points, had other plans. The Spartans advance to the semifinals while Ohio State anxiously awaits Selection Sunday.

Illinois defeats Purdue 74-67

The first of two second round upsets in the Big Ten tournament. It was also the first of two really entertaining games. Purdue came into the game winning 12 of their last 13 and remaining the surprise team in the Big Ten. Illinois, though, gave the Boilermakers more than they could handle. The Fighting Illini were led by Demetri McCamey, who put up 26 points and hit all six of his shots from downtown. The win gives Illinois its fourth in five games, and they are looking forward to playing Minnesota in the semifinal game. The Fighting Illini have beat the Golden Gophers twice this year by a combined 33 points.

Minnesota defeats Indiana 59-58

The best game the Big Ten tournament has seen by far. Maybe the best game in college basketball this year. Minnesota built a 16 point first half lead, but D.J. White led the Hoosiers back to a second half lead. Minnesota came back, though, and looked to be in a position to win the game when Eric Gordon missed two free throws in the final seconds. D.J. White came up huge again though, getting an offensive rebound and getting a foul call. Long story short, Minnesota was down by 1 with 1.5 seconds left on the clock. Blake Hoffarber received a long pass in the middle of a triple team, then turned around and sunk the game winning shot with his left hand. Christian Laettner has nothing of Hoffarber. Minnesota pulled off the upset, and goes on to face Illinois in the semifinal. D.J. White led the Hoosiers with 23 points (he also got to the free throw line 17 times) white Minnesota was led by Damian Johnson with 17.

You have to love the Big Ten tournament!!!
