Sports fans from all over the country (other than the Miami area, for some reason) have turned on LeBron James, if only for the summer. LeBron's transformation into one of the biggest d-bags in sports began long before he decided to take his talents down to South Beach. Unlike Favre and other d-bags in the sports world, however, James did a fine job hiding his true nature from everybody.
Well, almost everybody.
Two years ago when talking to a sports writer about LeBron moving on to the Knicks, Nets or who gives a crap, I commented that one reason James was going to leave the Cavs was his dislike for Cleveland and the people of Cleveland. I reminded him of the Yankee Cap Incident of 2007, James' visits with Dallas Cowboys players during Cleveland Browns games and the phenom's overall attitude when talking about Cleveland sports fans. This d-bag, in his mind, was granting the city of Cleveland the honor of seeing LeBron in a Cavs jersey. The writer told me how off I was and that LeBron was an Ohio guy, a Cleveland guy.
"And Clevelanders, because they were the bigger-city kids when we were growing up, looked down on us. ... So we didn't actually like Cleveland. We hated Cleveland growing up. There's a lot of people in Cleveland we still hate to this day." - Comments from Akron-born d-bag LeBron James that were leaked this week
In the same interview, LeBron goes on to say that Cleveland fans are "awesome," seemingly trying to erase the loud and obvious mistake he had made. What d-bag LeBron has failed to understand throughout the summer of 2010 is that Cleveland sports fans are a different kind of fan. These people have been tortured by heartbreak after heartbreak for 50 years. Add in a collapsing economy that has cost many of those same people their jobs and the departure of LeBron James, and 2010 is the worst year for Cleveland sports since the Browns left for Baltimore.
LeBron James is not a d-bag for leaving Cleveland. It's not his job to save his "hometown" city. The way he went about it, however, will forever link him with a list of biggest d-bags in sports history. Has a player ever before in the history of American professional sports demanded more validation than LeBron James during the summer of 2010? LeBron hopping from meeting to meeting in order to be told how great he was wasn't the action of a man trying to win a championship or even cash in a big paycheck. It was a pathetic display by arguably the most insecure d-bag in pro sports. A boy still not grown up who, to his credit, manages to become a slightly bigger d-bag with each month.
Legends lead their teams to titles. My hatred for Brett Favre grows with every breath, but there's no denying the man's greatness on the football field. When LeBron joined Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, James killed any legendary status he could have ever obtained. LeBron did what any d-bag would do if put in a similar situation. He took the easy way out, because alone he just isn't good enough, isn't man enough and doesn't have the heart of a real champion.
So congratulations to you, LeBron James, for being the second person to make my "Biggest D-bags in Sports" list. Enjoy your millions upon millions of dollars, the beautiful weather in Miami and what should be a very easy and potentially record-breaking NBA regular season. Myself and many others will be right here, waiting for June and the NBA Playoffs.
Maybe this year, you'll show up and actually hang around for awhile.
