Biggest Gaming Announcements at the Tokyo Game Show 2010

John Barnett
Another year, another Tokyo Game Show. While not every gamer appreciates TGS as much as they should, the event still manages to bring enough surprises and excitement to the table to be relevant. While heavily biased, ignorant gaming media sources like Game Informer and IGN bash Japanese game development, it's still obvious that they know how to excite gamers. Just what was worth mentioning at TGS 2010?

1. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3

The TGS announcement of the third Dynasty Warriors: Gundam game was a huge firecracker for TGS to light. The Dynasty Warriors games epitomize the hack & slash genre. While they aren't always as innovative as they should be, Dynasty Warriors is such a guilty pleasure that gamers just can't help but put hours into them. The Dynasty Warriors: Gundam series is no exception. Previously I reported rumors of this game's announcement and most of my source's details happened to be true. Check it out for yourself here.

Considered by many to surpass the regular Dynasty Warriors, the DW: Gundam games are widely acclaimed by gamers for the fast-paced combat, huge roster of playable mobile suits, and technical achievements in terms of number of enemies on screen and over-the-top action. Now the third game in the series has been announced!

What do we know so far? The game's graphical style is being overhauled and taking the cel-shaded road. The co-op mode is being made into fully online capable and the number of pilots and mobile suits is being drastically increased. Watching Haman's Qubeley and Char's Hyaku Shiki in action was an impressive sight. Also worth mentioning is word of enhanced AI to provide a greater challenge. Look for Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 within the next year.

2. Dynasty Warriors 7

It's funny that the mothership title of the Dynasty Warriors series took a backseat among fans to the Gundam entry. Not a lot was revealed about the seventh game in the series. What we do know is that the game will be PS3 exclusive and feature a de-cloned character roster. The game will also see expanded online options and potential DLC. Beyond that, a more varied story mode is being developed. A fresh layer of graphical paint is also being applied to the game engine.

3. Sonic Colors

Quickly being described as one of the best Sonic games ever, the Sonic Colors Wii demonstration wowed gamers at TGS. The gameplay is fast and thrilling, the graphics vibrant and colorful, and the game appears to be exactly what fans have been wanting. Sega is doing their best to craft the perfect next-gen Sonic experience- something they've struggled with with past games like Sonic '06 and Sonic Rivals. They hope to accomplish what the 360 and PSP failed at. Coming exclusive to Nintendo consoles this fall, Sonic Colors.

4. The 3DS

Although previously announced at E3, the 3DS showings at TGS this year were awe-inspiring. Like the DS before it, the 3DS is looking to revolutionize portable games. It's looking like it's going to follow in the Wii's footsteps of dominating its console cycle. Who isn't looking forward to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina or Time 3DS, Star Fox 3DS, Metal Gear Solid 3DS, Street Fighter 3DS, and so-on? The promise of glass-free 3D gaming is going to be a huge delivery for Nintendo.

5. Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection

The PS2, while massively successful, has a library of many gems buried under a landmass of shovelware- the fate of every landslide winning console (-cough- Wii -cough-). Two such gems are Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. At TGS we learned that these strange and endearing games are getting a second chance on the PS3. Those that missed out on them last time are getting a second chance!
