Biggest Storylines for Super Bowl XLII

Bruce Bostwick
While Tom Brady may be a story by himself due to his ankle, the real storyline for this Super Bowl is can the New England Patriots do what many consider the impossible and that's go 19-0. The only team remotely close to that would be the 1972 Miami Dolphins though they did not have the luxury of a 16 game regular season schedule and went 17-0. The only other story that is actually very intriguing is that can Eli Manning win the big one. It will be broken into 2 separate stories, 1st will be about New England trying to have a season like nobody else and go 19-0.

Perfection on the Line

Ever since the infamous Spygate, it has seemed that New England has been on a major mission. To dominate and continue to beat every opponent by any means necessary. Whether it is the close games or the blowouts, the Patriots as a whole did a fabulous job and credit has to be given to them. Tom Brady and Randy Moss both set regular season records albeit just by one more ahead of Peyton Manning and Jerry Rice, but still records nevertheless. Even if they lose, while it may seem bittersweet that the Pats went through the season and beat everyone, they had perhaps a season that will probably not happen again for at least 20 plus years. There has never been a team that has 4 Super Bowls in history and if New England wins, they will be the 1st ones ever. For New England, it is on the line and no question Brady will be playing, it's a matter of can he keep up the momentum and the extremely high expectations set upon him.

Can Eli Manning Get it done in the Super Bowl

Face facts Eli Manning has a lot of pressure placed on him since being a member of the Giants as the Quarterback. Now the pressure is on and can he win it all? This is the same exact pressure in that sense as his older brother Peyton when it came to winning in very important games. There is none bigger than the Super Bowl and also take into account he arrived faster than his brother. This is the New York media he is dealing with and they will never be satisfied with just an appearance in a championship game, they want it all or it will be a failure.

Patriots Super Bowl History

When New England won 3 Super Bowls this past decade, it was merely by a field goal. The 1st time winning, the team was a heavy underdog against the St. Louis Rams, a team that was good but has since then has completely had a meltdown. Back to New England, each of the Super Bowl victories have been close and this one is expected to be no different. The 2 Super Bowl losses the franchise has had, they were blowouts

Giants Super Bowl History

The last time the Giants were in the Super Bowl, they got beat by the Baltimore Ravens in a not-so close match up so it's been 7 years since the last appearance of being involved. The last time the team won was in 1991 defeating the Buffalo Bills just barley by 1 point. This however is a different Giants team than the ones that have won Super Bowl Championships.

Keys

Biggest keys are going to be the Quarterbacks. Eli Manning has been very effective and has not thrown an interception at all this post-season. One major factor is not to talk too much trash. It seems that teams like the Steelers, Jaguars, Chargers, and now the Giants are getting into the act as well. Receiver Plaxico Burress was quoted on guaranteeing victory over the Patriots. Of course Tom Brady brushed it off in this situation. If the Giants play mistake-free football and doesn't let Brady get in a rhythm, they may have a chance at winning. Super Bowl XLII is on its way.
