Worldwide Bicyclists Get Nude for the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR)

On June 12th, 2010, nude bike riders will pedal streets, trails and bike paths of the northern hemisphere of the globe for World Naked Bike Ride. The approximately bi-annual nude bicycle rides started in 2003 with the purpose being "to celebrate cycling and the human body" and "protest against car culture," according to the World Naked Bike Ride's main wiki site (no nude pics). In the United States, twelve cities will see hoards of nude bikers bum-rushing (literally) the streets on their bicycles. In Canada, bicycle participants plan on going "As Bare As They Dare" in seven cities. June 12th, 2010 will also see nude bicyclists in Italy, Mexico, Netherlands (Amsterdam), potentially Spain (there are many planned in Spain in June, without exact dates yet), Taiwan and the United Kingdom in three locations.

United Kingdom World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) Locations

"As Bare As You Dare" World Naked Bike Riders will also congregate in Manchester and Southampton on June 11th and Bristol and Briton Hove June 13th. The United Kingdom June 12th nude bicycle ride locations include Cardif, Edinburgh and London. In York and Sheffield, bicycle activist protesters will wait until June 19th to pedal the streets, trails and bike paths.

According to the World Naked Bike Ride Wiki FAQ, "The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against oil dependency."

United States World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) Locations

A dozen cities in the United States are currently scheduled to participate in the nude, semi nude and sympathetically nude bicycling of protest activists the weekend of June 12th, 2010. Currently scheduled for the athletically nude form of protest are Albany, NY; Albuquerque/Santa Fe, NM; Bellingham, WA; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Los Angeles, CA; Montpelier, VT; New Orleans, LA; New York, NY; Portland, OR; San Diego, CA and San Francisco, CA.

All Nude All the Time... In the Summer, That Is

In 2009, Seattle, Washington, hosted twelve "As Bare As You Dare" nude bicycle rides between June 26th and September 27th. So, expect Seattle to host a lot of nude bicycle protests again this year. Portland, Oregon, which has held nude bicycling protests every year since 2004, will hold two in 2010. On June 12th, only hundreds of people are expected to attend. However, on June 19th, thousands of bikers are expected to don their activism helmets and pedal the streets with their message of "exposing the unique dangers faced by cyclists and pedestrians as well as the negative consequences we all face due to dependence on oil." (According to the FAQ.)

If You Want to Be Heard and Seen... "As Bare As You Dare"

There is a complete list of ride locations displayed on the World Naked Bike Ride Wiki. If there is not one in your area (Here's a map of World Naked Bike Ride locations), you can organize or help organize one. Don't forget your activism outreach slogans. The WNBR Wiki even has a slogan page suggesting potential protest, activist and outreach mottos, spanning the categories of "environmental," "against oil dependency," "bike positive/car free," "road safety," "war and peace related" and other general mottos.

Future WNBR Protest Rides

June 12th, 2010, is not the only time to get involved in a nude bicycle expedition. Activist riders will pedal the streets, trails and bike paths in the USA on June 19th, 2010 in Berkeley, CA; Madison, WI; Portland, OR (as previously mentioned) and Saint Louis, MO. Within the United States, there are also rides planned in several other cities, which have yet to set an exact date. These cities include Boulder, CO; Burlington, VT; Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC.

All Canadian rides are scheduled for June 12th, 2010.

World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) Locations Down Under

For the southern hemisphere, the next large group of nude bicycle activists to hit the streets "As Bare As You Dare" will occur March 12, 2011. Naked bike protests are already scheduled to occur in March of 2011 in Australia, Brazil, Golden Bay, New Zealand and Lima, Peru. Brazil boasts two activist hot spots for March, 2011 - Brasilia and Sao Paulo.

Commitments have been made in Australia to host nine nude bike rides on the weekend of March 12th and 13th, 2011. Newcastle, NSW, will host a protest on March 13th, 2011. This is almost more than I can bare (LOL), don't want to hurt anyone, butt, no sorry, but, I can not bare to miss anything you write. How funny, but I do see (no pun intended) the need for cyclists making aware their safety concerns and at the right time too because of it being that season for it. Good work LIVIN.

I better re-word that.... (lol). I hate biking with my clothes on, so I know I'd definitely hate it with my clothes off. LOL

  • Rita Oakleaf (formerly Muether)6/1/2010

Oh my. Unless they stand up the whole time, I would think that would really hurt for both genders. I can't believe this is happening in Columbus, OH and I never heard of it. I'm all for biking, but nude biking? No, thanks. :)

  • Mike Oberg6/1/2010

    Thanks for your expose!
