Helmet: To protect kids from any type of head trauma, always make sure they wear a helmet when riding a bike. This can be said for toddlers all the way to adults, always use a helmet when riding a bike. More and more people die from head trauma ever year because they choose not to wear a helmet. Even if your child asks not to wear one, make sure they have one before they get onto the bike!
Proper Bike Fit: When purchasing a bike for your child to ride, make sure the bike fits them. This means make sure their feet can touch the petals and their hand can touch the hand brakes. If the bike has foot brakes on it, make sure your child can properly cycle the petals front and backwards.
Say "No" to Traffic Areas: High traffic areas are a for sure NO when it comes to kids riding bikes. Even if you're watching your child ride the bike, never let them go into high traffic areas. All it takes is a split second for a major life changing accident to occur. If you see lots of cars moving in both directions of the road, keep your child off the road and pick another riding spot for them.
Reflective Clothes: When you're child is riding a bike, make sure they have some sort of reflective clothing on. If the child doesn't have reflective clothing on, make sure the bike has plenty of reflectors. This will aid in helping drivers see the child on the bike more clearly especially at night. You should never let your child ride their bike unattended! However if you're going to supervise your child at night, place reflective clothing on them!
No Headphones: While kids love to listen to music and ride their bike, never allow them to do it! Make sure their ears are uncovered at all times while riding the bike so they can hear all sounds that may occur. Having their ears covered up with prevent them from reacting fast enough in case of an emergency. While some people believe headphones are ok to listen to as long as you have one ear uncovered, they're wrong! It is still a very dangerous thing to do!
Stick to Right Side of Road: As with anyone riding a bike, always stick to the right side of the road. This will allow on coming cars to see you clearly while you're riding. This is an especially important tip for kids; have them ride on the ride side of the road if they must travel on the street.
