Bike and Wine Tours in the Puglia Region!

See the Local Area and Taste the Wines that Make Puglia Famous!

There are a lot of ways to discover the beauty of the Puglia region: but taking a combination bike and wine tour in Puglia just may the most interesting!

All kidding aside (I can already hear the remarks about drinking and driving), a variety of tour packages are available when it comes to bike and wine tours of the Puglia region and I certainly don't want to promote one agency or tour over the other. What I do want to do is give you is an idea regarding the smart way to program your itinerary. Most tour agencies will be more than happy to tailor a bike and wine tour to suit your needs, or they will match up your interests with existing tours.

You may be wondering why the Puglia region and not some other region in Italy when it comes to learning about wine. Well not to overwhelm you with facts and figures but the Puglia region is one of the leading wine producing regions in Italy (and also one of the most unique in terms of places to visit). In fact, according to winecountry.it, the Puglia region produces more wine than any other Italian region usually making up around 17% of the national total. It also competes with Sicily for first place as grape producer.

Thus a bike and wine tasting tour can easily hit the many cities I've been writing about lately. Typical bike and wine tours will take you to one city a day. Anything more than that isn't realistic. Remember, the object of wine tasting tours isn't to get drunk, but you'll want to tour the premises, see the production, taste (and learn how to taste) the wine as well as tour the local area. Squeeze in a meal on top of that and your day is pretty much over with.

Cellartours points out that the flagship red grape of Puglia is the Primitivo. The wines made with Primitivo are luscious, heavy and definitely "food wines". Typical dishes in Puglia, to accompany their local wines include eggplant Parmigiano, Orecchiette pasta, flavored breads, aged ricotta, etc. Apart from Primitivo di Manduria (one of the best wines in Puglia in MHO), another amazingly successful red wine is Salice Salentino, a powerful red wine made primarily with Negro Amaro.

When biking you may not actually bike from one town to another. Some agencies may drive you to the general vicinity of a specific town where you'll have your bike(s) waiting for you. This saves time and gets right into the heart of the town you want to visit.

A bike and wine tour can be fun, informative and relaxing. Consider giving it a try on your next (or first) visit to the Puglia region.
