Here are some local Bike To Work Day and Bike To Work Week 2009 events for Portland, Oregon.
Join the City of Portland for its annual Bike to Work Day breakfast in Pioneer Courthouse Square on Tuesday May 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Tri-Met will also be there to talk about the newly remodeled transit mall. Bagels, doughnuts, coffee and tea will be served.
Take a Bike Commuting Basics workshop, also offered by the City of Portland. This workshop will be on Wednesday, May 13, 6:30 p.m. at Friendly House (1715 NW 26th), and repeats the following week on May 20.
Families will enjoy Kidical Mass, a monthly family-friendly bike ride. The May ride does fall during Bike to Work Week, so families can close out the week together at one of several rides available in Portland. Kidical Mass rides leave from the North Park Blocks, Knott Park in outer NE Portland, Sunnyside Environmental School in SE, and the Sellwood Pool. For more information, contact the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (info@bta4bikes.org).
For another way to get the kids involved, sign up for the Walk and Bike to School Challenge Month in May. Students in participating schools record how much they walk or bike to school during the month, and compete with other schools in Oregon. The Bicycle Transportation Alliance coordinates this event and provides materials and small incentives.
The Lloyd Transportation Management Association (a group of employers in the Lloyd Center area) will hold a Bike to Work Day party on Friday, May 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Oregon Square on NE Holladay between 7th and 9th. Festivities will include a free breakfast, free chair massages, free bike check-ups, door prizes and more. Anyone who brings a new rider receives a $3 City Coffee gift card. They'll also have a speaker - Joe Kurmaskie, "The Metal Cowboy."
Are there no local bike to work day events that work for you? Why not start your own? The League of American Bicyclists has a step-by-step guide to starting and promoting your own bike to work event.

Post a CommentThis is a great idea. It doesn't cost you a tank of petrol each week and it is good for you! I used to cycle to work in England, but I haven't been able to cycle anywhere over here, apart from around my local estate.
