Bilberry and Night Blindness: A Personal Perspective

LD Ballard
You have just found out that you suffer from night blindness, what do you do? This is the "internet age" so you decide to search for information and possibly a cure. You decide you prefer a natural treatment instead of prescription drugs. Is all of that possible? Let's find out!

If you search for alternative treatments and medications for night blindness, you will find yourself wading through a myriad of information from several sources. You discover a fruit called bilberry that is supposed to help, so you investigate further. While it may be interesting to know that the scientific Latin name for bilberry is Vaccinium Myrtillus, that another name in the United States for bilberry is huckleberry, that this little berry is a close relative of the blueberry, it still does not let you know whether or not it will help with your night blindness.

As you dig deeper into your research, you find an interesting story about World War II British fighter pilots. According to the story, these pilots were eating bilberry jam, which is said to be delicious though this writer cannot verify that fact. What they discovered was that their night vision improved dramatically. Ah, now we're getting somewhere. Although this a good story, is it fact or just another war story.

Upon further investigation, you find that the berry itself is great for night vision and a lot of other uses. The leaf, although many make a tea from them and use them for other purposes, can cause liver problems. You make a note to yourself: stay away from the leaves, just use the ripe fruit.

You are thinking now that maybe, just maybe, this bilberry will actually help, but just to be on the safe side, let's keep on investigating.

The more searching you do the more verification you have that this little bilberry will do the job for you. Things like when you find that there are preparations of this seemingly wonder fruit that helps not only night blindness but also cataracts and macula (a spot that allows you to focus sharply and is located in the back of the eye) degeneration.

That is great, but do you just eat the berry or are there any preparations that you need and where do you find them? Let's keep on searching.

What you find is that there is a bilberry extract available. That is a good thing, but are there any side effects. You search several places and find that there are no known side effects for the berry itself, just the leaves. You are glad you made that note to yourself. One more thing is needed. Where do you find the extract? More searching is required.

You find several online herbal pharmacies and vitamin shops so you choose two or three to compare. You find one that has extra strength capsules that contain bilberry extract, bilberry fruit, and bilberry powder so you decide to purchase it. After taking it as recommended for about a week, you notice an overall improvement in your vision so you decide to put it to the test for night blindness. You find that your night blindness has improved remarkably!

You are glad that you took all that time to research and found something that works and is not harmful.

This writer has conducted the above searches and now is a former sufferer of night blindness. Hopefully this will save you some time and help you become a former suffer of night blindness as well.

This one little berry called bilberry has done wonders for so many people that suffer from varied eye problems. Do not hesitate to give it a try.
