Bilingual Children Become Marketable Adults

The Future Benefits of Learning Languages During Childhood

Eva Kingsford
As the world changes so does the way various countries do business together as does the amount increase of foreigners living in various countries. This opens up whole new career paths for those who are fortunate enough to speak more than one language fluently as does it open up a whole new level of salaries for them as well. It has proven to be financially beneficial to be bilingual in the presently growing international and domestic job markets. It is a wise investment to any child's future to teach them the linguistic skill of another language.

Not only is learning a second language a marketable skill for the future but studies have found that learning more than one language early in life raises the IQ as well. The younger that children learn another language, the easier it is for them to learn and retain it. This also gives them an advantage later on in life in they chose to learn yet another language, it will make it easier as adults to pick up another language than it is for adults who only speak one language. What makes age an important learning bonus is the way our brains grow and change as we age. At younger ages, out minds can retain certain things easier than we can as adults. As we learn speech patterns as children, learning more than one language is easy and natural since at such early ages we do not have predefined concepts on how words and letters should sound. This makes it easier for us to sound native to the language and allows us to be more open to its flow rather than fighting it in our minds against the way we are used to hearing and speaking certain letters and sounds.

Another benefit to learning more than one language early in childhood is that when children learn languages early on they are then able to process the language as naturally as their native one. When most people learn an additional language as adults they must first think about each word and translate it in their mind from their native language to the learned one and the same when hearing another speak in that foreign tongue. This can make communicating in another language a timely and lengthy process. For those who learn the language during the developmental ages, communicating in another language is far easier as they are able to understand words and thoughts without having to first process and translate them. These people are able to essentially think and relate ideas or thoughts in their second language as naturally and easily as in their first.

Even in the domestic career market, more and more positions are now requiring bilingual employees. Here in the United States, that usually means Spanish and English. As different international cultures and groups grow within the US, so does the need for experts of various languages in order to efficiently communicate and conduct business with this new varying market. As more and more American companies choose to out source their services, the demand for professionals that are fluent in various languages will continue to rise. These employees are needed in order to conduct training in various companies as well as business meetings and negotiations. There is also a great demand for bilingual professionals in the legal, medical and retail industries. Giving a child the opportunity to learn additional languages is giving them the gift of a skill that will make them not only stand out in tomorrow's job market but be high in demand as well.
