Bill Brennan and the Stardust Casino Heist

T. Jay Kane
One of the most successful Vegas casino robberies you've probably never heard of was committed by a man named Bill Brennan in September of 1992, against the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Brennan worked as a cashier at in the Stardust casino and one day, before leaving work at the end of his shift, draped a bag containing about half a million dollars in cash and chips over his shoulder, walked calmly out of the casino, and was never seen or heard from again.

To those who believe that Bill Brennan successfully fled the country and either enjoyed or is enjoying the final years of his life on the beach of a beautiful island, then Bill Brennan is a criminal mastermind.

To those who believe that Bill Brennan was killed by a less than loyal accomplice who didn't want to share any of the loot, then Bill Brennan was just another low life who got what he deserved.

The fact is that nobody knows exactly what happened to Bill Brennan after he left the casino with the stolen money draped over his shoulder. Life on the beach and killed by a greedy accomplice are the two most popular theories. Anybody who may have seen or heard from Bill after the heist hasn't come forward to fill in the blanks in this mystery, so there's a good chance that we'll never know exactly whether or not Bill Brennan was genius or fool.

When the story broke, the Bill Brennan robbery was the second major robbery against the Vegas resort within six months. The first heist, which netted robbers approximately $1.1 million, was committed in April of 1992, but the perpetrators were eventually captured and prosecuted.

What sets the Brennan robbery apart from other major successful casino robberies is the simplicity that was involved. Some have speculated that an accomplice on the security force would have been required for Brennan to make it out of the casino without being noticed, which is a theory that fueled the idea that Brennan was killed by an accomplice, but no solid evidence to support the theory of an accomplice was ever discovered.

Brennan, if alive, continues to evade capture, despite being listed on the FBI's most wanted list and being featured on popular television program "America's Most Wanted".
