The Bill Cosby dead internet rumor that began circulating the internet early Monday thankfully turned out to be just that: an internet rumor. In fact, Cosby used the opportunity to plug a new iTunes app (see link below). But why do these fake celeb death rumors persist, week after week, month after month?
Is Bill Cosby Dead? Fans Of The Aging Actor Search Google For Answers
With today's wildly false Bill Cosby Dead rumor, the iconic actor and comedian joins the ranks of Russel Crowe (who was falsely reported to have fallen off a cliff in Austria earlier this year), Justin Bieber (who has been killed off by internet hoaxsters at least twice, perhaps thrice, by now), and the many others who have been rumored dead online. In reality, the stars were still happily walking the planet, but their fans were worried sick.
Bill Cosby fans will be glad to know that, though the actor is of what some would call an "accelerated age" (Cosby is 73), he is very much alive. He directly addressed the uncomfortable subject of his own mortality when he tweeted specifically about the Bill Cosby dead rumors circulating the web right now.
"Again, I'm rebuttaling [maybe he meant "rebutting"?] rumors of my demise...", the comedy star and legendary actor tweeted on Twitter Monday afternoon at around 1 p.m. PST. Bill Cosby then linked to his new iTunes app, saying "But I'm confirming, I have an app :)"
With that, an internet death hoax turns into a great opportunity for free self-promotion! What ever did we do without Twitter and such unfettered access to our favorite stars, and they to us?

Post a CommentAlthough Bill has quipped that being dead is not as much fun the fourth time, I hear he's really ticked about this one.
