Bill Cower Calls it Quits After 15 Years as the Steelers Football Coach

Today, on January 5, 2007 legendary and Hall of Fame coach Bill Cower called it quits in front of a large media audience in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bill Cower had served as the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 15 years. Bill Cower's team underachieved this past year as they failed to have a winning record after winning the Super Bowl last year.

Bill Cower was a native resident of Pittsburgh and grew up as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. When he took on the ob as Steeler's coach from Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll, Bill Cower had big shoes to fill. Chuck Noll had won 4 Super Bowls with the Steelers in the 6 years that he coached. Bill Cower lived up to the high expectations bestowed upon him and Steelers fans came to love him.

Bill Cower has a bunch of lovely daughters and a loving wife that he stated as the reasons for leaving behind the game he loves so much. His family had made sacrifices for him over the years and now Bill Cower thought it was finally time to call it quits and spend time with them.

Bill Cower's Steeler teams made 8 playoff appearances and finally won the Super Bowl last year. Bill Cower had nothing left to prove in football and he decided to finally walk away with one year and 4 million dollars left on his contract.

Bill Cower will forever be synonymous with his large chin that sticks out and his booming voice. His booming voice is often heard by players who joke around that they have to avoid the spit flying out of his mouth.

Bill cower leaves the game as one of the most respected coaches in the game and he has won several coach of the year awards.

There is still much speculation whether Bill Cower will come back to football as he is still a relatively young guy at age 49 and could still have a desire to coach. He did not definitively rule out that option at his press conference when asked the question.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are now in search for a coach and stability once more after having two coaches in the last 30 years. Look for offensive coordinator Ken Whistenhunt who has interviewed for several coaching jobs already to possibly get the job or the Steelers offensive line man, Coach Grim. The Steelers may also chose to look at assistant coaches on other teams to fill the coaching position.
