Parcells began his football career playing for the University of Wichita (now Wichita State). He then moved to become an assistant coach for six different teams until he became head coach at Air Force in 1978. The following year, he joined the New York Giants as defensive coordinator.
After having this job for one year, he then left the Giants to become linebacker coach for the New England Patriots. When head coach of the Giants Ray Perkins announced that he was leaving, Parcells was then given the job. He took over in 1983 and saw a disastrous losing season.
Upon his first season turning out so horribly, Parcells made the necessary changes to improve the Giants' record enough so the following two years to make back-to-back playoff appearances. 1986 saw Parcells take the Giants to Super Bowl XXI and beat out the Denver Broncos for the title. Parcells and the Giants returned to Super Bowl XXV in 1990, and were able to win 20 - 19 against the Buffalo Bills.
Following the 1990 season with the New York Giants, Parcells retired.
In 1993, he returned from retirement to coach the New England Patriots. On his third year as head coach for the Patriots, he was able to take the team to Super Bowl XXXI, but lost to the Green Bay Packers.
The New York Jet actively sought to get Parcells into a leadership role on their team, but there was controversy over his contract with the Patriots. A deal was ultimately made allowing him to coach for the Jets.
He continued on the Jets' sideline until 1999, taking them to the AFC Championship game in 1998, where they lost to the Denver Broncos.
He then retired again.
In 2003, he again came back out of retirement to join the Dallas Cowboys. During the 2006 season with the Cowboys, he took them to the first round of the playoffs. However, they lost.
Earlier today, Bill Parcells announced for the third time that he is retiring from head coach positions. Looking through history, this retirement announcement does not necessarily mean he is gone for good. Only time will tell if Parcells will no longer be on the sidelines as head coach.
