Lead Paint Violations in Billiard Games

Charisse Van Horn
Lead violations are still on the rise, and with new standards set forth by the FDA we can expect to see more U.S. products being recalled. China, however, continues to top the lead recall list with products that are being imported having lead content that violates U.S. standards. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of the toys: Acuity Golfer's Billiard Game and Clubhouse Golfer's Billiard Game due to lead violations. The games were sold through Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. and Golf Galaxy and affects 2,300 units. The violation is due to lead paint on the exterior of the golf balls. Both billiard games were manufactured in China.

There have been no reports of injury or illness associated with the games at this time of writing, however, with all lead related recalls it is important to realize that continued exposure to the contaminant increase risk of illness over time. Lead is toxic to the body and accumulates in the blood stream as well as in major organs. Since the body has a difficult time eliminating lead, it is continued exposure that is the greatest threat. Lead poisoning can cause delayed growth in children, mental retardation, and is to blame for a host of learning disabilities. Infants and young children are most susceptible to lead poisoning as their bodies are still growing and they can suffer the greatest damage. Anyone who has the billiard game s advised to stop using the toy immediately.

Name and style number identifies the billiard games. Acuity Golfer's Billiard Game is labeled as Style #AC302 and the Clubhouse Golfer's Billiard Game is labeled as Style# 302. You can find both the name and style marking imprinted on their respective packages. The set includes fifteen golf balls and six putting cups, the golf balls were painted to resemble pool or billiard balls and it is this paint that exceeds federal lead standards.

Prices for the Acuity Golfer's Billiard Game and the Clubhouse Golfer's Billiard Game were set at approximately $30.00. If you own either game, you are advised to take it back to the store of purchase for an immediate refund. Both games were sold through Dick's Sporting Goods Inc and Golf Galaxy Inc. If you have any questions regarding the recall, returning the product, or obtaining a refund you are advised to contact Dick's Sporting Goods.
