Billy Crystal Dons New Uniform... For a Day

Long-time comedian and actor Billy Crystal has joined the ranks of his favorite team, the New York Yankees, for one game. Crystal signed a one-day contract with the team, allowing him to play in today's exhibition game against the Pirates.

Crystal practiced with the team in Tampa on Wednesday, in preparation for the game. He held his own, hitting all 52 balls that were pitched to him, and keeping up with Derek Jeter during drills.

The Yankees have not specified what position Crystal will play in the game, other than to say he will be hitting. Crystal was an infielder when he played more than 40 years ago in high school.

When asked about what position he would play, Crystal told reporters Wednesday that he would be playing "DH- Designated Hebrew."

The move is a way for the Yankees and their manager to honor the actor who has been a lifelong supporter and friend to the institution. Crystal developed a movie entitled "61" honoring the team's most historic figure, Micky Mantle. He also claims to have carried a Mantle card around in his pocket his entire adult life.

There is significance in the uniform Crystal will wear in his one-day baseball career as well. He will be wearing number 60, in recognition of his own 60th birthday, which he celebrates on Friday.

Crystal is not the first famous face to sign a spring-training contract with a renowned baseball team. Garth Brooks actually signed on with three different teams, though his stats were less than stellar.

Crystal says the opportunity to play with his favorite team is a dream come true.
