Billy Joel & Katie Lee Joel on Oprah Show

Oprah's Dog Dies

Billy Joel and wife Katie Lee Joel appeared on the Oprah show tonight according to articles on the Newsday web site. This is the first interview for this May-November couple; Katie Lee is 32-years younger than Billy Joel. While on the show, Billy Joel sang the song, 'Only The Good Die Young' which is an interesting choice of song considering one of Oprah's favorite dogs died today according to an article in Usmagazine.com.

While I'm sure that nobody knew that the Oprah's dog named Sophie was going to die while they were filming the show, it is an interesting twist of fate that this mournful sounding song about dying was happening on that show today of all times. This song came out on Billy Joel's album called 'The Stranger' in 1977 before Katie Lee was born.

The song 'Only The Good Die Young' is about a man who is trying to convince a young Catholic girl to have sex with him. In the lyrics, the man informs the girl that she is fated to do so, which ended up having this song banned in many areas as anti-Catholic propaganda. I don't think that Katie Lee is Catholic, but she sure sounds young.

I am in a relationship where there are almost two decades between our ages, but I can't imagine what I'd do about three of them. At two decades, we are constantly navigating around our generational preferences on tippy-toes. Most things work out nicely, but some simply do not work at all. They can't work. We had different worlds to grow up in.

While Katie Lee claims in the interview, "He has this job that's allowed him to be really immature for a long time and I happen to be more mature for my age, so we meet somewhere in the middle" this isn't addressing the issue of tomorrow. Somewhere around the time that Katie Lee wants to go jogging at age 40, Billy is going to be complaining that he's too tired to go anywhere over his senior age status.

It's all such a shame that the first interview for this couple happened today the way that it did along with the news of Oprah's dog passing on. This age difference, along with that choice of song will be gossiped about across the internet, and I don't think that it will be pleasant for anybody involved.

The best move for Katie Lee and Billy Joel would have been to continue to avoid the media in my opinion. Billy Joel's career peeked around 1980, it's not like they needed to stick their heads up from behind the gossip barriers.

Katie Lee might be young- but she's a sharp cookie with a definite agenda- And she is going to use Billy Joel's fame and fortune to propel her own career and popularity no matter what it takes. This was quite obvious on the Oprah show yesterday. She's a big Oprah fan and acted ga-ga around her. And here she is married to one of the greatest creative artists of our time and "she didn't even know who he was when they bumped into each other coming out of the bathroom.?" "He could have been The Pizza Guy?" "I only knew Billy Joel wrote Uptown Girl and Piano Man?"

Billy Joel deserves better. A woman who loves him, respects him admires him-
This "little girl" should have been adopted as a friend for Alexa- then his selfless assistance in her shameless promotion would not seem so very wrong - on so many levels.
