Bin Laden's Death at Centerstage; Don't Forget About the Others

Don't Forget About the More Important Issues Going On

Brian Davis
Isn't it amazing how fast news can change, and unfortunately how easily we can all forget? Sure, things like the death of Osama Bin Laden are going to dominate the news no matter what else is going on at the time. While I certainly concede the significance of the news of Bin Laden's death, it's deeply unfortunate that it dominates the news where there are much more important happenings that more or less vanish from the various news outlets.

Its easily forgotten that Japan is still ruins from their record setting earthquake, that Tuscaloosa and the surrounding areas are just starting their recovery from their record setting tornado outbreak, Libya is in the middle of a civil war, and that a good portion of the Midwest/South are currently dealing with catastrophic floods. All of these issues are, dare I say, more important than the death of Osama Bin Laden. In fact, it's a lot more important.

Of course, this is no new occurrence. There are bulks of time that go by that based on the news outlets it would be hard to realize we are at war in two significant locations and that we have troops who are being killed. That's a shame, for a multitude of reasons. Essentially, I am writing this just to remind everyone of these facts. It's not bad that Bin Laden's death is being reported on, but there are people that deserve much more attention than a dead, psychotic, mass murdering terrorist does.

I would encourage, if you are able, to find some way to donate to these relief efforts. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find worthwhile charities that will handle the money correctly so I won't post any links. I'll let you, the reader; decide where you might want your money to go. Even if it's nothing more than a thought or a prayer, I'd send it their way; to Japan, Tuscaloosa and the other areas affected by the recent tornadoes, and those dealing with the floods across a large portion of the country.

I think this last week, as eventful as it has been, serves as a staunch reminder how easily the world's gaze can shift. I don't wish to come across as preachy, just nothing more than a friendly plea: don't forget.

We do forget important things for a while when something new happens. Thanks for the reminders.
