Traditional hormone replacement is usually with synthetic estrogens, progesterone and sometimes testosterone. These are either synthetic man made drugs or sometimes made from animals. In recent years there has been controversy about hormone replacement therapy, also known as HRT. While it has benefits for heart disease and osteoporosis, there are studies showing many risks. Many women do not want to take these risks. They look for alternatives for treatment of their menopausal symptoms.
Bio-identical hormone replacement is an alternative. It also has its benefits and downsides. Bio-identical hormones are made to have the same molecular structure as a woman's own hormones. Bio-molecular structures can not be patented. Many pharmaceutical companies do not like this. They are often made in compounding pharmacies. This means that they are mixed to fit specific prescription. This is often not covered by insurance. This may makes this option more costly. Some argue that it makes it not as safe. Different compounding pharmacies have different standards.
The upsides of bio-identical hormones are that they are identical to what a woman's body produces. A doctor will test the woman to see what her hormone balance is. The test is a hormone panel. The Doctor will look and see what hormones the woman needs to get her own hormones into balance. They then prescribe that specific amount. The prescription is made for that woman to match the hormone panel. It is tailored for her needs. The doctor will monitor the woman's hormone levels for the first year to make sure she is getting what she needs. Any changes will be made if necessary. So with this option a woman has individualized treatment.
Bio-identical hormones are natural. This is a benefit to a woman's body. The human body better metabolizes natural substances. This can lessen the side effects that are sometimes associated with traditional hormone replacement therapy. Mass produced synthetic hormone replacement is made for everyone. Bio-identical hormone is made for the individual. The woman gets the quantity that she needs.
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy has not been as widely studied as traditional hormone replacement therapy. Recent studies in Europe suggest that they are safer. Many doctors in the United States agree with this. Many do not. It is a topic that will be of much controversy in coming years.
Women all face this decision at some point in their lives. Many choose not to use any type of hormone replacement. They prefer to handle all the symptoms on their own. Those women who choose a form of hormone replacement therapy need to be informed. There are alternatives out there. Women need to talk to their doctor and do their research. One method is not the best for everyone. Bio-identical hormone replacement is just one of several options. A woman and her doctor need to decide the best treatment for the individual.
