Bio of NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin

Eleanthe Anderson
Denny Hamlin was born on November 18, 1980 as James Dennis Alan Hamlin Junior. He was born in Chesterfield, Virginia, where he became an early fan of racing. He began his career when he was only seven years old, racing go-karts. As a teenager, he won first place in the World-Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer's Cup. He was only fifteen at the time.

The following year, at age sixteen, Hamlin began racing Mini-stocks. Mini-stocks are considered to be the first step in the quest to becoming a professional racer. They only have four cylinders, which limits the speed and power that is available to the driver. In his first car race, which took place at Langley Speedway, Hamlin qualified for the pole position, and then won the race. After several years of stock car racing, and an increasing number of wins, Hamlin caught the attention of the several professional racers, and was offered a contract with Joe Gibbs Racing.

In 2004, Denny Hamlin began competing for NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Races). NASCAR is the most popular arm of the racing world. Hamlin completed his first full season of racing in 2006. That year, he drove in the Nextel Cup series and the Busch Series full time. He became the first Rookie of the Year candidate who took home the Shootout Victory in the Budweiser Shootout. In 2007, Hamlin raced in the Daytona 500, the Lenox Industrial Tools 300, the Chase for the Cup, and more. He continued to expand his number of pole positions and wins.

Hamlin is currently driving the Number 11 Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota. On May 9, 2009, he finished in thirteenth position at Darlington after some early troubles on the course. In April, he opened a car wash in Midlothian, Virginia. It is called Denny Hamlin's Speed Wash. The ribbon was cut on April 29th, and it is open for business.
