Biodynamic Gardening

A New Approach to an Old Gardening Practice

Nikki Phipps
The concept behind biodynamic gardening isn't anything new. This gardening practice relies on the moon and other cosmic forces to influence plant growth. Nearly all decisions in the garden are based on these influences. Planting by the moon is a technique that has been practiced by gardeners for centuries.

So how exactly does this biodynamic approach work? In layman's terms, plants contain significant amounts of water and as a result, they are drawn by the tidal pulls of the moon. For instance, the phase of the waxing moon and its influence is believed to draw moisture closer to the surface. Therefore, this is an ideal time for planting. The waning moon works opposite, drawing moisture away from the surface and deeper into the ground. Many people choose to clean up the garden during this time.

In addition to the waxing and waning moon phases, the zodiac also contributes to the planting by the moon concept. Biodynamic gardening includes reading nature and understanding how each of the elements (fire, earth, air, and water) affects the planting cycle. For example, during warm days, which are associated with the fire signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, fruit and seed formation takes place. Propagation is generally well received during the earth signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, which favor root growth. Flowering is commonly seen as the moon passes through the air signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Finally, plant growth is deemed the strongest during the water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

Paying attention to nature includes light factors, not only those associated with the sun but also with the moon. Typically, grains and above-ground crops (like strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.) should be planted by the light of the moon. This normally takes place anytime between the new moon and full moon. Roots crops (potatoes, beets, carrots, etc.) are planted under the darkness of the moon, during the full moon and new moon.

Although deemed by some merely as folklore or fool hardy, many gardeners still depend on the moon and zodiac for planting crops. They even swear by this biodynamic technique. If you'd like to give this gardening practice a try, it's helpful to consult with an almanac, like the Farmers' Almanac or Old Farmer's Almanac, for the best planting advice. Understanding the effects of the moon phases and corresponding signs, and timing your gardening chores accordingly can take the hassle out of gardening woes. By exploring the principles of planting by the moon, you'll be learning a new approach to an old gardening technique.
