Anita was an avid reader as she grew up, and after completion of high school, she attended college at Tufts University. After she completed her degree and graduated from Tufts, Anita then went on to teaching in the high school grade levels. She taught for quite awhile, until she decided it was time to quit her teaching and start writing a lot, and that is what she did.
As she started to write stories, like any beginning writer, she experienced piles of rejection letters from publishers. She wrote a story entitled "Past the Island Drifting," and submitted this to a literary magazine for which it won an O. Henry Prize. While this was very encouraging for Anita at the time, she knew that she wouldn't make it with just that one story. There had to be a real way to get started, so what she decided on was getting into journalism. Anita then packed up her bags, and traveled overseas to Africa, and there she remained for a three year period working for an African magazine.Once her three years was gone, Anita traveled back to the states. After coming back to stay in New York, Anita was hired to do journalism work for several magazines.
The year 1989 brought Anita success finally, in authoring her very first novel which was Eden Close. Ever after this first book, several others followed. One of her books known as, "The Pilot's Wife," was nominated for an Oprah's Book Club Selection. This book was also a movie back in the year of 2002. "The Pilot's Wife," is a book that zeros in on the subject of adultery. Her other related novels that cover adultery are "Where or When," and also "The Weight of Water."
Anita's books focus on many different life topics. Her book known as "Strange Fits of Passion," is one that takes a look at spousal abuse. Another book that clearly has this focus is "Eden Close." Anita does have a couple of books which are non-fiction that I know of. One is, "Remaking Motherhood," and the other is "Women Together, Women Alone." As you can see, she really focuses on many topics that are of interest to all women married or single. Anita's last book was published in 2009 known as "A Change in Altitude," which takes place in Africa.
Anita is married to a man she knew back from her youth, and they have two children and three grand kids.
