Barbara was born on August 9, 1945 in Boston Massachusetts. When Barbara was just eight years old, she experienced the death of her mother, which I would imagine is traumatic for such a young girl. Other than that sad event, Barbara's childhood was pretty ordinary. She took several music lessons on both the piano and the flute. In her high school career, Barbara learned a little bit about writing, but she didn't really pick up on writing as a career until after had her kids.
As far as her college education, Barbara holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Tufts University, and a masters degree in sociology from Boston College. At this time, Barbara was married, and her husband was then going to law school.
Once Barbara graduated from college, she became a researcher for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She also was a reporter as well as a photographer for the Belmont Herald. When Barbara's first child came along, she did some newspaper reporting work. She was mainly a photographer for the paper, and only wrote enough in order to give information about her photos. But as time went along, Barbara discovered that she was much stronger in her writing ability than in taking photographs.
When Barbara's twins were toddlers, she felt more inspired to possibly sit down and really write a book. So thinking she could give this a whirl, she did, as she thought about what her storyline would be, delved into some background and researching for her first try at a book, and seeing what she could come up with. It took her a few months to do the basic planning, and as luck would have it, her book sold, which was "The Passionate Touch," in 1981. Barbara's writing career only got better after that.
Barbara did write some nonfiction works too, one of which was the book Uplift: Secrets from the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors. Barbara has her own personal fight with breast cancer, so this is why she wrote the book that came out in 2001. This book has certainly served a great purpose for women struggling with breast cancer since the profits from this book goes into supporting this issue.
Barbara's latest new book came out in January 2010, " Not My Daughter," which is about a teenage girl that becomes pregnant.
