Biography of Baseball Player David Wright

David Wright was born on December 20, 1982 in Norfolk, Virginia. He grew up in nearby Chesapeake, Virginia where he attended Hickory High School. While attending Hickory High School, it became apparent that David Wright was an extremely talented baseball player.

David Wright was named to the All-State High School Baseball Team three different times during his four years in high school. After his senior season, he was awarded the honor of being the Gatorade Virginia Baseball Player of the Year and the Virginia All-State Player of the Year. He planned on attending Georgia Tech, but he was informed that he could be a top selection in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.

At the 2001 Draft, David Wright was selected by the New York Mets at the 38th overall pick. In 2003, his talent began to shine as he was awarded the Sterling Award for being the best player on the St. Lucie Mets, a Class A team. The following year, in 2004, he jumped to an AA team who moved him to the Mets' AAA team. On July 21, 2004, he made one final jump when he started at third base for the Mets in a Major League Baseball game against the Montreal Expos.

As David Wright quickly became a solid fielding and hitting third baseman, he earned the Mets' starting third base position and has not given it up yet. During his rookie season, he finished with a .293 batting average, 14 home runs, and 40 RBI despite only playing 69 games.

The following year, in 2005, David Wright played his first full season with the Mets where he finished with a .306 batting average, 27 home runs, 99 runs, 102 RBI, 42 doubles, and 17 stolen bases making him one of the best hitters on the Mets. He led the team in RBI, average, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and doubles. During the 2005 season, he also earned respect throughout professional baseball as a terrific defensive player. His bare-handed diving catch in a game against the San Diego Padres earned him the "This Year in Baseball Play of the Year."

The 2006 season has seen David Wright named to his first All-Star team where he hit a home run in his first ever All-Star Game at-bat. The night before the All-Star Game, David Wright also competed in the Home Run Derby where he hit 16 home runs in the first round, the third highest total ever. He eventually finished second in the All-Star Game Home Run Derby.
