Eileen had started college until she became married at the young age of 18. By age 20, her marriage had already turned sour, and she already had one child who was a boy. Having no money at all, she turned to the welfare system. She had dreams of becoming a really great author that could publish her writing, and this is what happened eventually. Since Eileen had no typewriter then, a neighbor loaned her one to write with. Eileen was very determined, and since she had no desk to place the typewriter on, she simply put the typewriter on the floor and wrote her first stories that way.
The first two years were tough as Eileen kept pumping out stories, and some of her articles sold, but as far as real books, she just wasn't there yet. She didn't care how many times rejection slips kept on coming, it made her all the more devoted. The articles kept her making enough money until finally, she was lucky in the early part of the 80's. Eileen helped to write the Sweet Valley High series which is geared for teens. As her luck begin to turn for the better in her writing, she and her two kids moved on to New York City.
Eileen's very first book was "The Garden of Lies," which became published in the year of 1986. This book was greatly successful, and as it made the New York Times bestseller list, Eileen suddenly felt rich as she hadn't in years from the proceeds of this book. Garden of Lies was only the very beginning. From there, she has gone on to publish many more novels. Eileen's ideas for her books come basically from her own life experiences.
Most of Eileen Goudge's books have themes of family. Garden of Lives was a tale about two babies that were accidentally switched at birth. One of the girls grew up in a wealthy family, and the other girl's family was poor. It takes many years before they discover this terrible secret.
Eileen's newest book is "Once in a Blue Moon." This is the story about sisters whose mother was sent to prison, and as a result, the two girls were separated into foster care growing up. One of those sisters is adopted, and the other girl gets into a lot of trouble as she is bounced around from family to family. The book has a four out of five star review.
