Biography of R. A. Salvatore

Robert Anthony Salvatore was born on January 20, 1959 in Leominster, Massachusetts. He is the youngest of seven children. Salvatore writes under the name R.A. Salvatore and is an American author who is best know for The Demon Wars saga; his Forgotten Realms novels in which he created Drizzt Do'Urden and Vector Prime, the first novel in the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order series.

He has sold over 15 million copies of his books in the USA alone. Twenty-two of his novels have reached the New York Times Bestsellers List.

Salvatore graduated from Leominster High School and he gives credit to his high school English teacher because he was instrumental in Salvatore's development as a writer.

Salvatore went to Fitchburg State College and during this time he became interested in fantast after reading J.R.R. Tolkien'sThe Lord of the Rings, which was given to him as a Christmas gift. He earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Communications before earning a Bachelor's of Art in English degree.

He was a bouncer before he took on writing full time. He started writing more seriously in 1982, developing a manuscript he titled Echoes of the Fourth Magic. In an interview with Project Fanboy, a comic book website, Salvatore said he landed the deal for his first book when, after finishing the script for Echoes of the Fourth Magic in early 1987. He sent the work to TSR and many other publishers. TSR was looking for an author to write the second book in the Forgotten Realms line and asked Salvatore to audition. Salvatore won the spot to write the sequel. Afterward, he went ton to publish several series of books in the Forgotten Realms.

Lately, his popularity has surged due to the Demon Wars sagas and his to Star Wars books. One of his most popular characters is Drizzt Do'Urden who is a drow, or dark elf, who is portrayed against the stereotypes of his race. He defied a nation of evil enemies with this swordsmanship and courage. His journey for freedom takes him to the surface where he constantly faces discrimination because of his dark heritage. Drizzt stumbles along until he comes across friends who understand the kindness of his heart. Together, they fight for justice against their enemies who disrupt the peace of Drizzt's new homeland.

Aside from novels, Salvatore also wrote the story of the PS2, Xbox and PC video game for Forgotten Realms: Demo Stone. Atari published the game and the game was nominated for awards by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. CDS asked Salvatore to edit a four book series based on the interactive online Everquest game. He even wrote the bot chatline for Quake III bots. Currently, Salvatore is busy working as creative director for 38 Studios (Green Monster Games), along with pitcher Curt Schilling and Todd McFarlane.

In February 2008, Devil's Due Publishing published Spooks, which is a comic book about the U.S. Government anti-paranormal investigator/task force, created by Larry Hama and Salvatore. Hama created the military plots and characters while Salvatore covered the monsters characters. Salvatore is noted for his descriptive battle scenes.

In 2010, Wizards of the Coast announced a new deal with Salvatore to write six more Drizzt books which are to be released between 2011 and 2016.

Salvatore and his wife have three children, Geno, Ryan and Caitlin.

    He is a very nice guy, too! I got to meet him at a con, and his panel didn't have super attendance, so I got to actually talk with him and he just kind of hung out and joked with those of us who were there, too.
